Evaluation of a wild lentil collection for resistance to vascular wilt

Abstract: Vascular wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lentis Vasud. & Srin. is the major disease of the cultivated lentil (Lens culinaris Medikus). Host plant resistance is the most practical method of disease management. Wild lentils .represent an unexplored potential source for disease resistance and other characters. Screening 219 accessions of wild Lens Miller and 2 accessions of Vicia montbretii Fisch. & Mey. (syn. Lens montbretii (Fisch et Mey) Davis et Plitm.) for resistance to a Syrian isolate of this fung… Show more

“…The wild Lens taxa are known to possess resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses (Bayaa et al, 1994(Bayaa et al, , 1995Gupta and Sharma, 2006). Incorporation of diverse genetic material from wild relatives using intensive hybridization would make it possible to recreate some of the lost variability while still respecting productivity and other desirable traits in lentil.…”

“…Application of fungicide is one of the solutions to overcome this problem but field applications is not feasible due to the expense required and technical difficulty in infusing chemicals into the soil (Taylor et al, 2007). The most sustainable and effective solution to this problem is the development of resistant cultivars (Bayaa et al, 1995;Kraft et al, 2000).…”

“…Sources of resistance have been found by many authors in cultivated lentil (Kannaiyan & Nene, 1976;Bayaa & Erskine, 1990;Hamdi et aI., 1991;Hossain et al, 1985;Khare et ai., 1979;Tiwari & Singh, 1980) (Bayaa et al, 1995).…”
