Evaluation of a Preoperative Pain Score in Response to Pressure as a Marker of Postoperative Pain and Drugs Consumption in Surgical Thyroidectomy

Abstract: The use of a preoperative test to assess individual pain threshold may be predictive for postoperative pain and analgesic request. The mathematical and statistical model used in this study confirms that a difference in the value of VAS of 3 shall be mathematically eligible for analgesia treatment.

“…The total score is 15 and the risk of postoperative pain is considered significant if the score is[4. Preoperative tests may be predictive of postoperative pain [15], and thus could have an impact on use of resources. The ASA score [16] is a subjective assessment of a patient's overall health that is based on five classes (I to V).…”

“…Features of successful patient experience of day surgery include an uneventful postoperative self‐care recovery and adequate pain management (Rago et al . ). However, unlike inpatient care where there is 24‐hour nursing and medical assistance, day surgery requires patients, families and communities to undertake recovery self‐care (Fetzer et al .…”

Self‐care during recovery following a wide variety of surgical procedures has been reported as problematic, with eventful recovery, patient discomfort and negative experiences being reported (McHugh & Thoms , Pavlin et al .…”

“…[16] Similarly, Rago et al used a sphygmomanometer cuff to produce a pressure of 250 mm Hg for assessment of pain tolerance and correlated this with pain scores and analgesic requirements after thyroidectomy. [17] Pain induced by electrical stimulation was used by Nielsen et al for similar prediction regarding post-cesarean pain. [18] However, all the above modalities would need extra-equipment and trained manpower to conduct the prediction tests.…”
