Time spent per patient in lumbar spinal stenosis surgery

Abstract: Purpose To examine the time needed from a surgeon's viewpoint to treat a patient operated for lumbar spinal stenosis. We firstly aimed to give evidence of the wide ranging duration of standardized procedure. Secondly, we investigated factors affecting the time allocated to each patient. Methods 438 medical records of patients operated on for lumbar decompression without fusion (2005)(2006)(2007)(2008)(2009)(2010)(2011) were retrospectively examined. Primary data were operative time (OT, min), length of stay (L… Show more

“…In the present study, the PTED and foraminoplasty procedures were performed for 161 minutes on average for patients under local anesthesia with negligible blood loss. The mean operative times reported for open decompression surgery were 106 minutes (range, 60–194 minutes), and the mean blood loss was 514 mL (range, 200–1,350 mL) for a single‐level operation. Therefore, the operation time was longer.…”

“…These patients experienced significant benefit and avoided surgery or hospitalization. Considering the average operative time of 106 minutes and a hospitalization length of stay of approximately 5 days, which had been reported in the study of Kaminsky and Banse, 17 this should acclaim a good reason to add this less invasive procedure for suitable patients as an additive to our armamentarium. We consider this treatment primarily in patients with non-calcified cysts and without general spinal canal stenosis or ligamentum flavum thickening and without preoperative instability.…”
