Evaluation of a Portable Urinary pH Meter and Reagent Strips

Abstract: Findings of this study support that the portable electronic pH meter is a reliable pH measuring device. It appears to be more accurate compared to reagent strips readings.

“…For some kinds of stones, the value of the urine pH is an important indicator of treatment success [93] and tracking this through each day using a dipstick has been recommended for cystinuric patients [1]. New devices that can provide more accurate measurement of urine pH by the patient at home are becoming commercially available [94,95]. Potentially such devices could also provide other measures of urine composition.…”

“…A urine pH of 8.5 or 9.0 is indicative of urea-splitting organisms [ 18 ]. In a previous study, a portable electronic pH meter was found to provide more accurate results than commonly used dipsticks or test strips [ 19 ]. In comparison, our UTI testing reagents were based on colorimetric analysis and demonstrated considerable specificity, agreement, PPV, and NPV, without electrically powered or complicated machine readers.…”

“…On the other hand, the pH meter is a medical device, which has been validated with patients [20,21], designed for urine pH self-monitoring, enabling patients to easily control urine pH on their own and its applicability may be extended to other urological pathologies where urinary pH plays an important role, such as acid-base imbalance diseases, urinary tract infections, cystitis, painful bladder syndrome or stent encrustation [22][23][24].…”
