Evaluation of a novel nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite paste Ostim® in comparison to Alpha-BSM® - more bone ingrowth inside the implanted material with Ostim® compared to Alpha BSM®

Abstract: BackgroundThe purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance a newly developed nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite, OSTIM® following functional implantation in femoral sites in thirty-eight sheep for 1, 2 or 3 months. Ostim® 35 was compared to an established calcium phosphate, Alpha BSM®.MethodsBiomechanical testing, μ-CT analysis, histological and histomorphological analyses were conducted to compare the treatments including evaluation of bone regeneration level, material degradation, implant biomechanical … Show more

“…Consequently, many novel calcium phosphate compositions have been developed, such as Ostim35 Ò (Aap Implantate AG), a biomimetic HAP with a similar morphology to the bone spicules of biological apatites in natural bone. Ostim35 Ò consists of a paste containing 65% sterile water and 35% biomimetic HAP [26]. Another example is nanohydroxyapatite (nano-HAP) [27,28] (Fig.…”

“…Penyembuhan secara spontan pada beberapa kerusakan tulang tersebut tidak mampu mengembalikan stabilitas fisiologis yang diperlukan. Berbagai kasus yang terjadi bahan pengganti tulang dan sendi sering diperlukan untuk merekonstruksi struktur anatomi dan memulihkan stabilitas tulang (Huber et al, 2009). Biomaterial sintetis dapat menjadi pilihan lain untuk mengatasi bagian tulang dan sendi yang patah atau retak.…”

“…An additional monophasic, nanostructured calcium phosphate bone void filler is Ostim®, an injectable bone matrix in paste form. It consists of a highly concentrated aqueous suspension of synthetic nanosized HA crystals (average crystal dimensions: 100 × 20 × 3 nm 3 ) prepared by a wet–chemical precipitation reaction between calcium hydroxide and phosphoric acid 115–117. The solid ceramic content in Ostim® is about 35 wt% and it does not harden when mixed with blood so it can be used to increase the volume of autologous or homologous grafts.…”

“…Its injectability enables application of Ostim® in complex defect sites obtaining the desired filling. Ostim® can be combined with other types of calcium phosphate ceramics such as bulk HA or biphasic (β‐TCP + HA) granules for different applications 115–117…”
