Evaluation of a low-cost temperature measurement system for environmental applications

Abstract: Thermochron iButtons incorporate the latest in digital technology, making them smaller, less expensive, durable and potentially more reliable than many other temperature logging devices. The objective of this study was to test the accuracy of an inexpensive air temperature measurement system, composed of a Thermochron iButton and radiation shield. Sixty-one iButtons were subjected to a sequence of two water baths (0°C and 24·9°C) to assess the absolute accuracy of the sensors. Five solar radiation shields were… Show more

“…Vertical temperature profiles (TPs) were constructed by embedding seven iButton temperature sensors and loggers (DS1922L, Maxim, Inc., 0.0625 C resolution, 0.5 C accuracy, 130 s response time) [Hubbart et al, 2005;Johnson et al, 2005] into 2.5 cm diameter steel rods at depths of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 cm in the streambed and at 5 cm above the streambed. Silicone sealant was used to waterproof the sensors and insulate them from the rod.…”

“…Average values by land use were calculated and used as ES values. Inverse values (1/DTR) were used to ease graphics comparisons; by doing so, higher indicator values mean higher supply of the ES (Hubbart et al 2005;Hubbart 2011). …”

“…On the other side prolonged high temperature will result in loss of flowers, fruits, drying of leaves and slowing down of plant growth. Soil temperature also affects the plant growth because it affects the absorption of water from the soil by the plant [10].…”
