Evaluation of a ferret-specific formula for determining body surface area to improve chemotherapeutic dosing

Abstract: CT-derived BSA measurements of ferrets obtained via open-source imaging software were reliable. On the basis of study results, the recommended formula for BSA in ferrets would be 9.94 × (body weight)(2/3); however, this represented a relatively minor difference from the feline-derived formula currently used by most practitioners and would result in little practical change in drug doses.

“…In that study, CT images from 12 pet rabbits were transferred to radiation therapy planning software and 1 mm slices were used to generate the surface contours to determine BSA, and nonlinear regression was then used in the current formula to generate a K constant of 9.9 . This was similar to another CT‐based derivation of a BSA formula for ferrets which yielded a K constant of 9.94 with the help of 3D surface modeling using open‐source imaging software to determine BSA . These values are similar to the K constant of 10 used in cats and 10.1 used in dogs .…”

“…Similarly in animals, initial BSA data were obtained by pasting strips of strong manila paper, gummed on one side, to the hair of the animals [6] or rolling a revolving metal cylinder of a known area, attached to a revolution counter [7]. Recently, however, complex techniques, such as computed tomography have been applied [8], and these have undoubtedly improved the quality (precision, ease) of data (and, frankly, I cannot imagine a live ferret being wrapped in a sheet of paper to estimate its BSA! ).…”
