Parés-Casanova, P. M., Minoves, J., Soler, J., Martínez-Silvestre, A., 2020. Divergent scute asymmetry among pure and crossed individuals of Testudo hermanni (Gmelin, 1789). Arxius de Miscel·lània Zoològica, 18: 43-50, Doi: https://doi. AbstractDivergent scute asymmetry among pure and crossed individuals of Testudo hermanni (Gmelin, 1789). Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) refers to subtle differences between left and right sides in bilaterally symmetrical organisms or their parts. Both genetic and environmental changes can increase FA, reflecting deterioration in developmental homeostasis of adult morphology due to a loss of developmental stability. In this study, we used geometric morphometric techniques to examine plastral scute asymmetries in a sample of 31 pure and crossed Testudo species (T. hermanni hermanni n = 23 and crosses with T. hermanni boettgeri n = 8) only females by means of 19 anatomical landmarks. Procrustes ANOVA indicated that FA in crossed individuals was significantly higher than that in pure individuals. Crossed individuals also showed a greater degree of phenotypic plasticity than T. hermanni hermanni. We conclude that crosses among T. hermanni hermanni and T. hermanni boettgeri can increase homozygosity and are responsible for greater developmental instabilities. Nonetheless, more information on crossed phenotypes could be of great interest to raise pure Hermann's tortoises for reintroduction programmes.
Eight different morphometric dimensions were monitored on 106 lamb carcasses belonging to three Catalan meat sheep breeds (Ripollesa, Rousillon Red and Xisqueta). Our purpose was to examine differences with regard to measurable carcass dimensions and also to establish between and within breed relationships among the carcass components. Measured variables included: carcass weight (CW), leg length (LL), carcass internal length (IL), carcass length (CL), chest width (ChW), hip width (HW), chest depth (CD), leg circumference (LC) and chest circumference (CC). From these measurements seven indices were obtained. Roussillon Red carcasses were the shortest, with the largest leg capacity, the lowest corporal index and giving a sense of "squareness". Xisqueta carcasses presented the longest leg length. Ripollesa carcasses were the smallest in chest circumference. The rest of the variables were similar between breeds.
Introduction and material and methods. We studied a sample of 37 dentulous dry mandibles from European wild board (Sus scrofa) and compared both the right and left sides in their dorsal aspect. To study the influence of age, the samples were grouped according to dental status: “subadults” (erupting 3rd M, n=22) and “adults” (fully erupted 3rd M, n=15). Individual levels of asymmetry were analysed from x- and y-coordinates of the 16 landmarks on the dorsal aspect of the mandible. Results. The analysis separated directional asymmetry (one side of the body with a larger character value than the other) and fluctuating asymmetry (small random deviations from perfect symmetry), which were both found to be significant. Conclusion. The condylar ramus was the most asymmetric structure for both age groups.
Background Deviations from the perfect symmetry of normally bilateral symmetrical characters occur during individual development due to the influence of multiple factors. Fluctuating asymmetry (FA) is the random developmental variation of a trait (or character) that is perfectly symmetrical, on average, across a population. Directional asymmetry (DA) occurs when one side of the pair of body sides is strongly more marked. Objective We investigated the presence and level of skull FA and DA in the Araucan horse, a breed from East Colombia. Study Design A sample of 21 skulls belonging to adult animals was studied by means of standard geometric–morphometric methods using 16 landmarks on the dorsal aspect of the crania. Results Measurements showed a significant DA with a consistent rightward shift of the splanchnocrania. Conclusions The results of this study raise questions about the influence of masticatory biomechanics on the asymmetric development of the skull, and also about how management and ingesta-specific properties (such as abrasiveness) may influence this asymmetry.
