Evaluation of a 7‐year school‐based community dental hygiene programme in Portugal by high school teachers

Abstract: Teacher evaluations of this kind of programme are critical for the development of school-based Dental Hygiene Education programmes. Teachers believe that Dental Hygiene Education is crucial for students' well-being.

“…In contrast, teachers who received training from a dental professional were significantly more likely to teach OHE compared to those who did not. It has been recommended that health professionals play a proactive role in engaging teachers to incorporate OHE in their teaching. Capacity building through a robust OHE training programme conducted by dental professionals for teachers and supplemented by provision of educational materials and consultation may be pivotal in empowering school‐based oral health promotion efforts, which in turn may improve the sustainability of these programmes in special schools.…”
