Evaluation of a 3% surf solution (surf field mastitis test) for the diagnosis of subclinical bovine and bubaline mastitis

Abstract: On the basis of closely similar diagnostic efficiency of SFMT to CMT in terms of sensitivity, specificity, predictive values and kappa index together with inexpensive and ready availability of SFMT reagent, it tempting to suggest that SFMT can be use as a cheaper, user-friendly alternative animal-side subclinical mastitis diagnostic test in poor countries.

“…This was much lower than that (56-100%) reported by Muhammad et al, 2009 andSharma et al, 2010. The specificity of SCC observed in present study (84.8%) is in close approximation to that reported by Jain et al (2009) andChoudhari (2000) who documented the same as 79.6 and 84.4% respectively, however, Sharma et al (2010) recorded 97.76%.…”

“…This test was performed as described previously (Schalm et al, 1971;Muhammad et al, 1995 andMuhammad et al, 2010). The SFMT is a CMT-like test which has been demonstrated to be comparable to CMT in terms of sensitivity and specificity of mastitis detection (Badiuzzaman et al, 2015).…”

“…It exists for long time, adversely affects quantity and quality of milk and constitutes a reservoir of microorganisms due to their contagious nature for other animals within the herd (Schultz et al 1978). Diagnosis of subclinical mastitis can be performed by various tests like California Mastitis Test (CMT) and Surf Field Mastitis Test (SFMT) under field conditions (Bachaya et al, 2005;Muhammad et al, 2010) Mastitis in countries like Pakistan increases due to poor disease prevention and reporting system (Javed et al, 2009). Goat mastitis has not been accorded due consideration by the scientific community of the country (Arshad et al, 2006;Ali et al, 2010) because considerable efforts and resources have been focused on the control of mastitis in cattle and buffaloes previously.…”

“…Regarding the individual cow level, the sub-clinical form of the disease can be detected by bacteriological examination and somatic cell counts (SCC). [11] Various antibiotic based intra-mammary infusions for the both dry cow therapy and the treatment of mastitis are available. However the increasing emergence of antibiotic resistant pathogens.…”
