Seven hundred ninety six milk samples from 266 quarters of 69 lactating cows were subjected to microbiological investigations for identification of pathogens. One hundred ninety bacterial isolates were recovered from 89 infected quarters, among these monomicrobial infection was found in 50 (56.2%) quarters, whereas, mixed infection was observed in 39 (43.8%) quarters. Bacterial isolates identified were Staph. chromogenes (49.47%), Staph. hyicus (21.1%), Staph. epidermidis (11.05%), Str. agalactiae (5.8%), Staph. aureus (4.2%), Staph. intermedius (3.1%), Enterobacter sp. (1.5%), Klebsiella sp., E. coli (1.05%), Micrococcus sp. (1.05%) and Serratia marcescens (0.52%). Milk samples from every quarter of each cow were also subjected to 6 mastitis marker tests named Somatic cell count (SCC), California mastitis test (CMT), electrical conductivity (EC) by EC-meter as well as by hand-held mastitis detector, pH detection by impregnated paper strip and also by pH meter. Efficacy of mastitis markers for diagnosis of sub-clinical mastitis was determined by comparing results of mastitis marker tests with microbiological findings. Mean value of SSC in milk from healthy quarters was significantly lower (p≤ 0.01) than that in milk from infected quarters. Significantly higher (p≤ 0.01) value of SSC was observed in milk samples having coagulase positive staphylococci as compared to that in milk from quarter with coagulase negative pathogens. The mean electrical conductivity (EC) in milk samples from infected quarters was significantly higher (P<0.05) than that from healthy quarters. Numbers and percentages of samples showing true positive, true negative, false positive and false negative results with SSC, CMT, EC by EC-meter, EC by hand-held meter, pH by impregnated strips, pH by digital pH-meter tests were evaluated and compared. The sensitivity and specificity of impregnated pH paper strip, CMT, pH-meter test, SCC, electrical conductivity by EC-meter and the same by hand-held mastitis detector were evaluated The compatibility between the results of SCC, impregnated pH paper strip, CMT, EC-meter, pH-meter, hand-held mastitis detector and bacteriological culture examination (reference test) was found to be 64.4, 63.4, 61.5, 59, 59 and 53 respectively.

Mastitis in goats, analogous to dairy cattle, is among the momentous diseases of economic value in all parts of the world. Local information of epidemiology of goat mastitis is scanty. In the present study, considering geographical distribution of Beetal goat, 172 flocks were randomly pulled out by "Survey tool box" to reduce biased sampling from perie-urban and urban areas of six districts of Punjab. By following the proportionate sampling strategy and assuming the highest population (70%) of Beetal all over the Punjab, Beetal strains were screened for the prevalence of mastitis from Faisalabad, Jhang, Chiniot, Bahawalpur, Muzzafargarh and Rajanpur districts. Screening of the flocks with surf field mastitis test indicated that overall prevalence of caprine mastitis in Beetal breed was 17.39% while in Beetal Faisalabadi strain 16.53% from 116 flocks, in Beetal Makhicheeni 18.06% from 32 flocks and in Beetal Nuqri 19.33% from 24 flocks. Microbiological examination of milk samples showed various types of mastitic microorganisms. The predominant isolates included Staphylococcus (S). hyicus (45%), S. xylosus (19%), S. simulans (16%), S. aureus (9%) and unidentifiable Staphyloccocal species (11%). Antibiotic sensitivity test was conducted on the most prevalent isolates. S. aureus and S. hyicus showed sensitivity to eight antibiotics: amoxicillin, ampicilin, lincomycin, sulfamethoxazole+trimethoprim, novobiocin, enrofloxacin, amoxicillin+ clavulanic acid and oxytetracycline while S. xylosus was sensitive to all antibiotics except novobiocin and S. simulans was sensitive to lincomycin, sulfamethoxazole+ trimethoprim, enrofloxacin and resistant to all other antibiotics. The study found over all 16.74% mastitis in different strains of Beetal. The most important parameters as; type of housing, farm hygiene, age, stage of lactation, parity, color, body condition score, teat ends, SFMT score and decreased milk yield were found pertinent risk factors so that prompt attention required for mastitis control in goats.

A comparative trial was designed to evaluate the efficacy of topical herbal gel-Mastilep gel (M/s Ayurvet limited) instead of using antibiotics as a dry cow therapy. Total 30 Crossbred advance pregnant cow were selected, divided in to 3 groups T0, T1, and T2 having 10 numbers of cows in each. Group T0 was kept as control. In group T1, dry cow therapy started with herbal gel-Mastilep for 5 days (before drying off) and 5 days (after calving). In group T2 dry cow therapy was done by using Enrofloxacin, synthetic antibiotic injection (fortvir 30mg), 2 injection at 72 hour interval, I/M. Results revealed that in the control group (T0) SCC (X10 3 ) was increased from 183 on day 0 to 186 on 5 th day and in absence of any treatment overall SSC further increased up to 203 on 3 rd day after parturition.In Group T1, the overall SCC (X10 3 ) was reduced from 187 on day 0 to 147 on 3 rd day after parturition. . In group T2, the overall SCC (X10 3 ) was 189 on day 0 which reduced to 182 on 3 rd day after parturition. On 3 rd day after parturition, milk production (liter/day) was significantly more in group T1 (14.95) followed by group T2 (14.56) further followed by group T0 (10.96).
