Evaluation of 1000 lacrimal ducts by dacryocystography

Abstract: Obstruction of the lacrimal ducts is normally total, unilateral, and sited at the valve of Krause. The obstruction of this valve predominantly affects women, whereas obstruction of the valve of Hasner mainly affects men. There was no significant difference in the distribution of obstructions by age group.

“…The value of these modalities in the diagnosis of diseases of the LDS has been the subject of numerous studies. It is generally accepted that the modern imaging technique of DS--DCG is the gold standard for outlining the in vivo anatomy, luminal profile, and pathology of the LDS [6]. A typical DS-DCG image with a 1024 × 1024 matrix has an in-plane spatial resolution of 250 µm [3].…”

“…Variations in the diameter of the NLD have been studied in bone specimens and by computerized tomography (CT) (Saxena, 1984;Groessl et al;Janssen et al;Shigeta et al;McCormick & Sloan, 2009;Fasina & Ogbole, 2013;Ramey et al, 2013;Takahashi et al, 2011Takahashi et al, , 2013Yong et al, 2014) Obstruction of the NLD can occur anywhere in its trajectory; however, previous studies with dacryocystography and dacryoendoscopy have determined that in two thirds of patients, the most common site of obstruction is the entrance to its bony portion (62-73 %), and this is not always considered in CT studies (Sasaki et al, 2005;Francisco et al, 2007). The morphology of the entrance to the NLD varies among individuals.…”

“…Epiphora constitutes one of the major and very common problems in all age groups [1]. Recent developments in ophthalmology, such as balloon dilatation, stent implantation, laser therapy and endoscopy of the lacrimal drainage system, raise the need for a detailed anatomical knowledge of this system.…”

“…However, the surgical production of an inferior meatal window facilitates the treatment and observation of lesions inside the sinus during and after surgery [8]. With these techniques, the only important anatomical features seen in the inferior nasal meatus are the opening of NLD and the lacrimal fold [1,2].…”
