Calcium hydroxyapatite, HA, (Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 ) bioceramics, owing to their similarity with the human bone and dentin minerals, attract significant interest for orthopaedic and dental applications. Biological apatites, on the other hand, are carbonate substituted and calcium-deficient. Biomimetic coating of titanium and related alloys with carbonated apatitic calcium phosphate is an important area of research in implantology. While this paper specifically refers to coating Ti-6Al-4V, (TAV) the obtained results are valid with other related alloys as well.An attempt was made in the current research to accelerate the biomimetic coating process through precalcification of the alkali and heat treated alloy. The precalcification resulted in a homogenous layer of calcium precursors on the surface of the alloys. Such precursors accelerated the biomimetic deposition of carbonate hydroxyapatite (CHA) coat resembling that of the biomineral apatite upon soaking in Kukubo corrected simulated body fluid (1.5 c-SBF). The development of coats on Ti-6Al-4V surfaces were assessed by step by step diffuse reflectance infra-red spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy.The essential information of biodeposition was obtained by following the uptake or release of calcium and inorganic phosphorus, Ca, iP, ionic species biochemically and mirrored by parallel electrical conductivity measurements of the soaking solutions.

The biocompatibility of commercially pure (cp) titanium stems from its chemical stability within an organism, due to a fine film of impermeable titanium oxide covering the metal surface, which guarantees its resistance to corrosion. Despite its biocompatible characteristic, this material does not promote the formation of a hydroxyapatite layer, therefore, many research groups have sought to alter the material's surface, introducing modifications that might influence corrosion resistance. The electrochemical behavior of cp Ti, with hydroxyapatite coating and without hydroxyapatite coating, commonly used in implant materials, was investigated using an artificial saliva solution at 25 o C and pH=7.4. In the conditions of the study it was observed that the hydroxyapatite layer influences the properties of corrosion resistance. This study of the behavior of cp Ti with and without hydroxyapatite coating, in naturally aerated artificial saliva solution at 25 o C, was based on open circuit potential measurements and potentiodynamic polarization curves. At approximately 1x10 -6 A/cm 2 the potential for cp Ti with and without hydroxyapatite coating begins to increase at a faster rate, but at -74mV (SCE) for coated cp Ti and at 180mV (SCE) for uncoated cp Ti the increase in potential begins to slow. This behavior, characterized by a partial stabilization of current density, indicates that in those potential ranges a protective passive film is formed.

Influence of radiopacifier additives on calcium aluminate cement properties

The aim of this study was to determine the best radiopaque additive to be incorporated to calcium aluminate cement (CAC) to promote radiopacity. Measurements of optical density were carried out on white MTA and CAC with and without additives such as: polymeric dispersant, plasticizer and various radiopacifiers. The effects of the radiopacifying addition on some properties of CAC were also evaluated. The radiopacity value for CAC-Bi 2 D 3 (25%) was higher than the other radiopacifying agents tested. The addition of ZnD (25%) and 15%ZnD:10%Bi 2 D 3 increased the compressive strength of CAC, whereas for Bi 2 D 3 (25%) containing samples the strength was lower than for the CAC. The ZnD (25%) and 15%ZnD:10%Bi 2 D 3 additions also reduced the apparent porosity. CAC does not have sufficient radiopacity to be distinguished from adjacent anatomic structures, such as dental tissues and bone. The addition of 15%ZnD:10%Bi 2 D 3 can be suggested as the most suitable one to obtain the best compromise between good physical and mechanical properties and ideal radiopacity for clinical purposes.
