Evaluation and Policy Research on the Sustainable Development of China’s Rare Earth Resources

Abstract: As rare earth resources are indispensable raw materials for modern society, they have become strategic global reserve resources. Even though China is the world’s largest producer and exporter of rare earth, the industry has low efficiency and severe problems with over-exploitation and environmental pollution; therefore, there needs to be a greater focus on the sustainable exploitation of rare earth resources. This paper establishes an innovative evaluation index system for the sustainable development of China’… Show more

“…Rare earth elements (REE) are indispensable strategic resources in the eld of science and technology (Liang et al, 2018;Du et al, 2020). Because of their unique physical and chemical properties, they are widely used in the development of materials in the elds of light, electricity and magnetism (Kumari et al, 2018).…”

“…Rare earth elements, known as "industrial vitamins", are widely used in catalysts, permanent magnets, glassmaking, lighting and other elds (Huang and Zhu 2019;Liang et al 2018;Ni'am et al 2020;Zhao et al 2019). Dysprosium (Dy) has always been one of the most important rare earth elements because of its irreplaceable role in optics and permanent magnets (Bisaka et al 2017;Fujiwara et al 2016;Liang et al 2018; Zheng et al 2020). Moreover,China has attached great importance to the rational development of rare earth resources in recent years.…”

“…Kamenopoulos and Burford studied the criteria and indicators of sustainable development, with a focus on the criteria for and performance indicators of sustainable development in rare earth mining [14,15]. Liang et al applied the entropy method and grey relational analysis method, and developed a set of performance indicators for the sustainable development of rare earths in China, and evaluated the sustainable development of rare earths in China from 2006 to 2016 [16]. The results indicated that the main factor that affected the sustainable development of rare earths was a lag in the development of an environmental protection system and a rare earth protection system.…”
