Evaluating the ergonomics of a student learning environment

Abstract: Ergonomics is a key consideration of a student-learning environment. This paper examines aspects of ergonomics and application to the design of tables in three classrooms at a Midwestern university. Custom tables with power outlets and Internet access via Ethernet data ports were planned for classrooms in 2000 to facilitate a laptop program. However, table height, specifically thigh clearance from the seat to the bottom of the work surface, was not fully considered. The ergonomic analysis of the classrooms by … Show more

“…Peng (2016) focuses on the opportunities and limitations students perceive in the EFL classroom environment. Rudolf and Griffiths (2009) point out that implementing ergonomics principles in the school learning environment addresses diverse issues (e.g. physical factors such as equipment and work area; teaching factors such as instructional material, technologies, and curriculum; environmental factors such as temperature and lighting; and temporal factors such as schedule and length of the school day and breaks).…”

“…Developing the perceived usability evaluation questionnaire. A 13-item online questionnaire was developed in the Qualtrics platform based on items obtained from healthcare seating design guidelines in the literature and the Evidence-Based Design Furniture Checklist for healthcare environments (Malone & Dellinger, 2011;Rudolf & Griffiths, 2009). The items were modified prior to implementation into the questionnaire to match the purpose of the study.…”
