We present a study examining the impact of physical and cognitive challenge on reported immersion for a mixed reality game called Beach Pong. Contrary to prior findings for desktop games, we find significantly higher reported immersion among players who engage physically, regardless of their actual game performance. Building a mental map of the real, virtual, and sensed world is a cognitive challenge for novices, and this appears to influence immersion: in our study, participants who actively attended to both physical and virtual game elements reported higher immersion levels than those who attended mainly or exclusively to virtual elements. Without an integrated mental map, in-game cognitive challenges were ignored or offloaded to motor response when possible in order to achieve the minimum required goals of the game. From our results we propose a model of immersion in mixed reality gaming that is useful for designers and researchers in this space.

Augmented Reality is an advance technology that enhances the real world by overlaying digital data on top of it. When Augmented Reality (AR) experience is delivered on mobile devices it is termed as mobile augmented reality (MAR). MAR is state-of-the-art technology that has completely revolutionized the way of accessing and interacting with information thus invoking new experiences for users all around the world. This article is an effort to summarize the current research regarding user experience of MAR. Mobile AR Publications of past 10 years are identified for a preliminary review from prominent online databases and digital libraries. The aim of this study is to identify the areas of User Experience (UX) that lack research. We present a classification of present UX research in MAR domain. Research findings and possible opportunities for future research are also discussed.

The Smarter Objects system explores a new method for interaction with everyday objects. The system associates a virtual object with every physical object to support an easy means of modifying the interface and the behavior of that physical object as well as its interactions with other "smarter objects". As a user points a smart phone or tablet at a physical object, an augmented reality (AR) application recognizes the object and offers an intuitive graphical interface to program the object's behavior and interactions with other objects. Once reprogrammed, the Smarter Object can then be operated with a simple tangible interface (such as knobs, buttons, etc). As such Smarter Objects combine the adaptability of digital objects with the simple tangible interface of a physical object. We have implemented several Smarter Objects and usage scenarios demonstrating the potential of this approach.
