Evaluating the benefits of real-time feedback in mobile augmented reality with hand-held devices

Abstract: Augmented Reality (AR) has been proved useful to guide operational tasks in professional domains by reducing the shift of attention between instructions and physical objects. Modern smartphones make it possible to use such techniques in everyday tasks, but raise new challenges for the usability of AR in this context: small screen, occlusion, operation "through a lens". We address these problems by adding realtime feedback to the AR overlay. We conducted a controlled experiment comparing AR with and without fee… Show more

“…Some use this term to refer only to simultaneous attention (sometimes called partial attention), while others include rapid task switching (sometimes termed alternating attention). According to Roda [21] task switching is switching focus completely and rapidly between tasks; repeatedly switching focus is cognitively demanding [22].…”

“…It has been shown that a real image with augmented interaction through the screen [6] can provide a better intuitive interface than an abstraction of such a system on a screen as well the usefulness of real time feedback systems through tangible interfaces [7]. Augmented interfaces have been used to remotely control electronic devices in a home-use case [8] [9].…”
