Evaluating restoration potential of transferred topsoil

Abstract: Questions Translocation of topsoil and its seed bank for ecological restoration is increasingly popular. How representative is the soil seed bank of the extant vegetation at the source site? What influence does the transfer process have on germinant density, species and plant functional type composition? Does smoke and heat treatment of transferred topsoil enhance germination and potential for restoration success? Location Banksia woodland of the Swan Coastal Plain, Western Australia. Methods To assess the eff… Show more

“…The soil component as limiting factor may frustrate attempts at restoration (Bulot et al, 2017;Jim, 2001). The most widely used technique and which is considered as the best for rehabilitating the reference ecosystem is soil transfer (Bulot et al, 2017;Fowler et al, 2015). Our results show that in the long term, the replacement of the topsoil by transfer presents characteristics that are virtually similar to those of the steppe topsoil.…”

“…Soil transposition may increase the diversity of regional native species, genetic variability, and the chances of recruiting species adapted to adverse conditions (Reis et al, 2003;He et al, 2016). In this sense, many authors have emphasized the use of the seed bank as an efficient strategy for covering degraded or disturbed areas by including species of different forms of plant life (Tozer et al, 2012;Ferreira et al, 2015;Fowler et al, 2015).…”
