Evaluating of IAQ-Index and TVOC Parameter-Based Sensors for Hazardous Gases Detection and Alarming Systems

Abstract: The measurement of air quality parameters for indoor environments is of increasing importance to provide sufficient safety conditions for workers, especially in places including dangerous chemicals and materials such as laboratories, factories, and industrial locations. Indoor air quality index (IAQ-index) and total volatile organic Compounds (TVOC) are two important parameters to measure air impurities or air pollution. Both parameters are widely used in gases sensing applications. In this paper, the IAQ-inde… Show more

“…Comparing the current results of the general performance of the SGP41 gas sensor with the results in previous studies [ 11 , 13 , 19 ] for SGP30, SGP40, and BME680 shows that the SGP41 sensor has a better response to most of the VOCs that were previously tested, in addition to its better selectivity due to it containing an additional sensing layer for nitrogen oxides, which makes it a better choice for new designs of air pollution monitoring devices and harmful gas detectors.…”

“…Nowadays, semiconductor metal oxide sensors are commonly used due to some of their attractive properties such as low cost, small size, long life, ease of use, and their ability to detect a wide range of chemical gases and vapors. In addition, they are characterized by the ease of adjusting their output, which is usually in the form of a change in the electrical impedance of the sensing material [ 10 , 11 , 12 , 13 ].…”

“…The using of chemical gas sensors has increased rapidly in recent years due to their numerous applications such as environmental monitoring, healthcare, industrial processes, food safety, and defense. [ 11–13 ] Metal oxide semiconductor materials were long considered as leading candidates for gas detection in the early 1960s. However, metal oxides are usually operated at elevated temperatures, which require the incorporation of a microheater with the sensing material.…”

“…Dangerous gases are sufficiently toxic or reactive substances that vigorously or violently give off heat and energy, and become poisonous in contact with air, water, or some other common material. They can be classified in various ways, including acutely toxic, corrosive, flammable, dangerously reactive, and oxidizing compounds [1][2][3][4][5][6][7]. Toxic compounds include hydrogen chloride, benzene or toluene, dioxin, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs, such as hydrocarbons, fluorocarbons, chlorofluorocarbons.…”
