Evaluating Highway Traffic Safety: An Integrated Approach

Abstract: This paper presents a novel methodology for determining the overall highway safety level by integrating statistical analysis and analytic network process (ANP) with set pair analysis (SPA) which is applied in the evaluation of the overall highway safety for the first time. The methodology accounts for both quantitative and qualitative factors that contribute to traffic safety. The statistical analysis uses crash, alignment, intersection, and other data to determine the significant indices (variables) that affe… Show more

“…In this regard, several studies have carried out pavement sustainability concepts or road sustainability for contributions that improve economic, road social and environmental aspects. For example, Mao et al [8] provides a method to improve pavement performance sustainability by a reasonable traffic flow assignment; Corriere and Rizzo [9] provide guidance for a methodological approach of sustainability in road design; Farooq et al [10], Yang et al [11] and Demasi et al [12] analyzed factors that contribute to traffic safety; in environmental sustainability, Montgomery et al [13] provide a wide range of ideas and options to improve the inclusion of environmental sustainability throughout the road project cycle.…”

“…Taylan, Bafail, Abdulaal, and Kabli (2014) developed hybrid methodologies based on fuzzy AHP and fuzzy TOPSIS and applied the relative importance index method to prioritize the project risks based on the obtained data. Yang, Said, Lin, and Zheng (2018) presented a novel methodology to determine the overall highway safety level through statistical analysis and ANP with set pair analysis (SPA). D. Shin, Y. Shin, and Kim (2016) performed a comparative analysis of AHP and fuzzy AHP to evaluate the potential risk factors at the construction site of a nuclear power plant.…”

“…ANP applies and analyzes a super matrix for weight synthesis (Saaty, 2004;Zhao et al, 2017). The representation of the network model and the weight synthesis are the two main components of ANP method (Saaty, 2004;Yang et al, 2018). The structure of ANP model can be represented in the graphical form (which qualitatively represents the interactional relationships and feedback among the components) and matrix form (which qualitatively represents the degree or magnitude of the interaction or feedback).…”

“…It can be seen that one of the most important and common disadvantage is seldom considering the coupling of multiple risk factors on mountainous highways, and the pertinence for the mountainous highway is not very strong [12]. Another important disadvantage is that large quantity of random road tra c accident data and the corresponding detailed data are needed, and it is di cult to obtain the data or the data are not recorded during the study period in many regions [30,34]. e method proposed in this research can help improve these aspects.…”
