Evaluating fishermen’s conservation attitudes and local ecological knowledge of the European sardine (Sardina pilchardus), Peniche, Portugal

Abstract: BackgroundEuropean sardines are an important fishing resource in the North Atlantic. Recognized for its great commercial and economic value in southern Europe, this resource currently has low stock indices. From this perspective, fishers’ local ecological knowledge (LEK) is appreciated as an auxiliary tool in the management of sardines in this region. Our goal is to evaluate the LEK and attitudes towards the conservation of Sardina pilchardus in the typical fishing village of Peniche, Portugal.MethodsFrom June… Show more

“…The average age of fishers was approximately 57 years old, following the same trend observed in an ethnobiological survey conducted in the Peniche fishing community in central Portugal (average of about 58 years old) [19, 20]. Minho riverine fishers showed a global trend observed in the profile of worldwide artisanal fishers where the level of education these individuals tends to be predominantly basic [4547].…”

“…Studies with ethnozoological characters are still scarce in Portugal. The only published works in the same field of ethnoscience on the local ecological knowledge (LEK) are from the European sardine in Peniche, Portugal [19, 20], and another contribution about fisher’s knowledge about the understanding and identification of Essential Fish Habitats (EFH) for skate species in central of Portugal [21]. Elsewhere in Europe, there are only a few social and cultural studies targeting anadromous fish [22–27], but nothing similar to this research, and with LEK attributes around the sea lamprey ( P. marinus ).…”

“…Even with a numerical composition of similar fishers, about 35% more interviews were conducted in Arraial do Cabo, Brazil. The number of fishers interviewed in both villages in our study was sufficient to answer our questions (BRAGA et al, 2018a(BRAGA et al, , 2017. The average age of the interviewees was 52.41 years old (sd = 13.4), and the fishing experience time was 31.81 years (sd = 13.2).…”

“…The fishing community of Arraial do Cabo has about 1.000 active fishermen (GIGLIO et al, 2017), while in Peniche the number of active fishers reaches 996 (BRAGA et al, 2017). Even in different social and geographical contexts, the primary goal of both study sites is the sustainable use and conservation of the natural resources by local dependent communities, which are mainly represented by these artisanal fishers (BRAGA, PARDAL and AZEITEIRO, 2018b;ICMBIO, 2019).…”
