Ethnozoological knowledge of traditional fishing villages about the anadromous sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) in the Minho river, Portugal

Abstract: BackgroundSea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is a diadromous fish compromised by various stressors, which can lead to population decline and the urgency of stronger conservation regulation. In the absence of documentation of direct knowledge of local populations, a broader zoological and ecological understanding of sea lamprey fishing has become vital for the preservation of traditional practices and conservation of this migratory fish. To this purpose, we collected data from the P. marinus about the artisanal f… Show more

“…Anthropologist Brent Berlin’s theories have inspired several ethnobiologists and linguists studying folk biology, including the naming and classification of fish in Europe [ 97 ]. Rural communities in Europe developed folk taxonomies for various organisms and grouped them according to use, characteristics, appearance or behaviour [ 33 , 50 , 77 ]. As Lars-Erik Edlund has shown in a fascinating study of whitefish in northern Sweden, fishermen discern several folk taxa of whitefish in one and the same lake, depending on how they were classified by the inhabitants [ 98 ].…”

“…Very few scholars doing research in European waters have so far characterized themselves as ethnoichthyologists or ethnobiologists [ 29 33 ]. However, long before ethnoichthyology (and ethnobiology) were established as disciplines in Europe, anthrogeographers , ethnologists, fishery biologists, folklorists, historians, linguists and osteologists carried out research on the importance of fish and fishing.…”

“…By classifying the environment, human groups can develop strategies that favor their survival, such as recognizing potential fishing areas and identifying patterns of fish migration (see Braga et al 2019). Human classification of the natural world emerges from general cognitive and specific folk biological forms of reasoning that are shaped by cultural learning and utilitarian factors (Berlin 1992;López et al 1997).…”

“…Diadromous migratory fish species that constitute important fishery resources for local fishing communities and local economies [1,2], face threats from the sea, estuaries, and riverine basins [3,4]. Sea lamprey Petromyzon marinus Linnaeus, 1758 and allis shad, Alosa alosa Linnaeus, 1758 are anadromous fish species that migrate from marine to freshwater habitats to spawn and complete their life cycle [4].…”

“…In the Minho River Region, the sea lamprey fisheries support the local economy and play an important sociocultural role [1,2]. In this area, "Fishers shared a vast informal knowledge of sea lamprey zoology and ecology ( .…”
