Evaluating Elastic-Plastic Behaviour of Rock Materials Using Hoek–brown Failure Criterion

Abstract: As a matter of fact, the failure criteria only predict failure's initiation in materials. And, in order to predict post-yield behaviour of materials, a much complicated formulation for stress-strain relationship is required, which we know as plasticity theory. For instance, these formulations are developed based on Mohr-Coulomb criterion for soils and Drucker-Prager criterion for concrete. According to a majority of rock mechanics researchers, the empirical and experimental Hoek-Brown failure criterion is one … Show more

“…Tunneling projects consist of different phases including pre-construction studies, risk assessment, cost evaluation, design phase, construction, monitoring (sometimes some of the mentioned phases will be merged when performance based design is the selected design method) (Sayadi et al 2012;Hasanzadehshooiili et al 2012aHasanzadehshooiili et al , 2012bGhorbani et al 2013;Zavadskas et al 2015;Zhang et al 2016). One of the major issues in design of tunnels is the loads carried by tunnel linings (Ghorbani et al 2013).…”

“…In this regard, it is common among practitioners to design tunnel structures more conservatively. Design of support system of tunnels, due to the problem complexities, has always been one of the most important and complicated problems in the tunnel engineering field (Hasanzadehshooiili et al 2012a). Since rock mass properties are not the only parameters controlling rocks' stress-strain behavior, special attentions should be paid to the support type and the time of support installation, which makes it an interaction rock-support problem.…”

“…As an alternative way to empirical models, hydraulic and mechanical (HM) coupled approach is adopted for describing the inherent anisotropic mechanical behavior (Li et al, 2014). Lots of elastic–plastic models that couple the equations of flow and mechanical equilibrium have been proposed to simulate the HM response of rock mass (Hasanzadehshooiili et al., 2012; Le and Nguyen, 2015; Mokhtari et al., 2015; Nguyen and Le, 2015; Shen et al., 2012). These models take the classical elastoplastic model for the mechanical process of rock into consideration and use an anisotropic permeability tensor for the flowing process of water.…”

“…Geotechnical engineering comprises a variety of different fields (Baziar, Ghorbani 2005;Ghorbani et al 2012;Ghorbani et al 2014;Hasanzadehshooiili et al 2012;Zavadskas et al 2010). Stabilizing the base soil is one of the most important issues, which is common in all the projects located on the problematic or weak soils or in the projects that due to the heavy constructional devices or applying loads need higher strength parameters for the base material (Rafalski, Ćwiąkała 2014).…”
