Europium-152 Depth Profile of a Stone Bridge Pillar Exposed to the Hiroshima Atomic Bomb

Abstract: The 152Eu activity depth profile of a granite pillar of the Motoyasu bridge located 132 m from the Hiroshima atomic bomb hypocenter was assessed. The pillars each measured 82 cm in depth, 82 cm in width and 193 cm in height. One of the pillars was bored and 6.8-cm-diameter core samples were removed and cut into 2-cm-thick disks. Two gamma rays of 152Eu, 122 keV and 344 keV, in each disk were measured using a low background, gamma-ray spectrometer, and the activity distribution was determined as a function of d… Show more

“…These data, too, confirmed the discrepancies noted in the final report of DS86. In addition to a single measurement of 154 Eu published in 1983 [45], few further data were reported [59][60][61]. The most important new information resulted from the measurement of another radionuclide, 36 Cl, that was predominantly produced by thermal neutrons via a (n,γ ) reaction on 35 Cl.…”

“…Recently, it was shown -in studies with 59 Nithat AMS in combination with the use of a gas-filled analyzing magnet system (GAMS) can achieve detection limits that are about 2 orders of magnitude better than the detection limits for 63 Ni with the AMS and characteristic x-ray method [90]. Present and future activities will focus on the development of AMS with GAMS for 63 Ni.…”

“…152 Eu was a very important nuclide for evaluating the thermal neutron fluences from the atomic bombs in Hiroshima and Nagasaki. A great number of 152 Eu measurements have since been made from samples exposed to either the Hiroshima or Nagasaki atomic bomb (Hasai et al 1987;Hoshi et al 1989;Nakanishi et al 1983Nakanishi et al , 1987Nakanishi et al , 1991Okajima and Miyajima 1987;Sakanoue et al 1987;Shizuma et al 1992Shizuma et al , 1993Shizuma et al , 2003. The "Dosimetry System 1986" (DS86) was formulated for the evaluation of individual radiation dose to the survivors based on a computational model that was verified by the use of experimental data from Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Roesch 1987).…”
