European Bilateral Pediatric Cochlear Implant Forum Consensus Statement

Abstract: This is a consensus statement on pediatric cochlear implantation by the European Bilateral Pediatric Cochlear Implant Forum. The consensus statement was determined by review of current scientific literature to identify areas of scientific and clinical agreement of current understanding of bilateral cochlear implantation. The statement is "Currently we feel that the infant or child with unambiguous cochlear implant candidacy should receive bilateral cochlear implants simultaneously as soon as possible after def… Show more

“…Generally, it may be done after the 6th month of life in the first year. Bilateral implantation should be performed in cases of bilateral deafness, if possible simultaneously or otherwise as sequential implantation with a short time interval in order to use the sensitive phase for the development of binaural hearing [28], [29]. Hearing aid fitting beside unilateral cochlear implantation is indicated in cases of asymmetric hearing with unilateral sensory hearing loss and useable hearing ability in the contralateral ear.…”

“…Possivelmente, o aprimoramento de estratégias de codificação considerando a bilateralidade seja capaz de melhorar ainda mais os resultados (Hoesel, 2004). Ainda assim, o Fórum de Implante Coclear Bilateral Europeu de 2012 anunciou consenso de que o melhor tratamento disponível atualmente é a implantação bilateral precoce (Ramsden et al, 2012).…”

“…This was done in order to try to determine the minimum necessary costs which would need to be covered if an individual were to receive a cochlear implant. Currently most individuals still use one implant, though bilateral implantation is becoming the treatment of choice, especially for children (Johnston, Durieux-Smith, Angus, O'Connor & Fitzpatrick, 2009;Ramsden et al, 2012;Summerfield, Lovett, Bellenger & Batten, 2010). In this study, 30 participants (19%) were bilaterally implanted.…”

“…The effectiveness of cochlear implants in providing increased sound perception for this population is well documented. They result in improved auditory performance and speech perception for adults and children, with benefits extending to improvements in education, occupation and quality of life (Carpenter, 2009;Chute & Nevins, 2006;Ramsden et al, 2012). Cochlear implants have become the treatment of choice for many individuals with severe or profound sensorineural hearing loss (Chute & Nevins, 2006;Carpenter, 2009).…”
