European adolescents’ level of perceived stress and its relationship with body adiposity—The HELENA Study

Abstract: School is reported to be an important source of adolescent stress and should be the focus of stress management campaigns. Only in girls, the hypothesis that stress might be involved in the aetiology of obesity during adolescence was supported.

“…Different stress coping mechanisms between both sexes could also be considered as a possible cause of the different findings between men and women. For instance, perceived stress has been an important predictor of both diet quality and adiposity, and women are particularly susceptible to perceived stress (de Vriendt et al, 2012;Isasi et al, 2015;Nastaskin and Fiocco, 2015). In addition, a population-based study showed different socioeconomic determination of obesity in men and women, increasing the complexity of modeling these variables (Monteiro et al, 2001).…”

“…The first of these is (school-related) stress, which is negatively associated with cognitive performance and academic achievement in adolescents [37]. Adolescent girls report significantly higher levels of (school-related) stress than boys [38]. Physical activity is associated with lowered stress [39] and might have relatively greater beneficial effects on (school-related) stress in girls (because of their higher stress levels) than in boys.…”

“…Our results were consistent with De Vriendt et al . 's recent report from the Healthy Lifestyle in Europe by Nutrition in Adolescence cross‐sectional study, in which perceived stress was significantly associated with increased measures of general and abdominal adiposity in girls only . Although a well‐defined association is not described in the literature, chronic stress may be a factor interfering with energy balance and the maintenance of weight status, i.e.…”
