Etiology of Secondary Caries in Prosthodontic Treatments

Abstract: When preparing prosthetic restorations, dentists always try to create restorations functionally ideal while not compromising on esthetics. The factors that make a restoration successful include how well they fit both internally and marginally, their ability to withstand punishment without breaking, and their visual appeal. Imperfect marginal adaptation can lead to unpleasant and unwanted side effects such as plaque accumulation, marginal discoloration, microleakage, carious and endodontic lesions, and periodon… Show more

“…This aids in the diagnosing process as well. Even in cases [ 19 , 20 ] where aesthetics is a top priority, the development of suitable augmentation procedures and the introduction of innovative implant surfaces have led to acceptable treatment outcomes [ 8 ]. In this regard, prosthetic and surgical methods have enhanced the aesthetic results for the teeth that will be replaced [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…The ideal fixed partial denture needs planning and that is started by an adequate diagnostic impression and diagnostic casts. [6][7][8][9][10][11][12] The diagnostic cast is necessary to give the dentist a complete perspective regarding the patient's condition as well as the conditions of the prospective abutments, their inclination, the opposing dentition's conditions, and the presence and details of the wear facets. This also serves for the diagnostic wax up.…”

“…It has also been reported that bacteria can preferentially reside along restoration-tooth margins and grow there over a long period [7,8]. In addition, gradual dissolution of cement, deterioration of the cement's physical properties and in particular washing-out of cement along restoration margins, creating retention sites for bacteria, are also considered causes of secondary caries at restoration margins [9,10].…”

“…An ideal restorative material has sufficient mechanical properties and bonding performance to resist functional forces and degradation in the oral environment [9,10,11]. Additionally, prevention of biofilm growth at tooth-restoration interfaces is important to prevent secondary caries and maintain the restoration's function for a long term [10,12].…”
