Etiological role of brucellosis in autoimmune hepatitis

Abstract: To show that brucellosis may trigger autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), in addition to nonspecific liver involvement and toxic hepatitis, due to a class effect of tetracycline family used for treatment. We present a female patient admitted to our hospital due to partially improved fatigue and elevated liver enzymes following doxycycline and streptomycin usage for brucellosis. Brucellosis is endemic in our country, Turkey. It may involve any organ in the body. Liver is frequently involved. Doxycycline used for treatme… Show more

“…However, all of three dogs received diminazene treatment showed relapse or no recovery of PCV and PLT count, we consider the possibility of the synergistic effect unlikely. Although it was known that clindamycin, metronidazole and doxycycline induce pseudomembranous colitis, peripheral neuropathy and hepatopathy, respectively, such adverse effects were not detected in any dogs in this study [7,19,21,22]. Thus, the therapeutic protocol used in this study is a new candidate for the treatment of B. gibsoni infection.…”

“…Liver involvement is also a relatively common finding in patients with neurobrucellosis [23]. It seems that this is multifactorial in origin and could be developed after brucellosis infection or caused by anti-brucella medications injury [31,32].…”

“…Molecular sequences that are shared among viruses and autoproteins may trigger autoimmune processes (2,3). Infectious agents such as Escherichia coli , mycobacteria, chlamydia, Helicobacter species, lactobacilli, Novosphingobium aromaticivorans , and betaretroviruses may elicit loss of immunological tolerance and induce primary biliary cirrhosis (4), and bacteria such as Coxiella burnetii (2) and Brucella abortus may induce overlap syndrome (AIH and primary biliary cirrhosis) (5). We report a unique case of coexistent leprosy and AIH in a child.…”
