Ethyl lactate as a tunable solvent for the synthesis of aryl aldimines

Abstract: Ethyl L-lactate can be tuned with a cosolvent to create polarity conditions ideal for synthesizing aryl aldimines that crystallize directly out of solution within minutes under ambient conditions in excellent yields and requiring no further purification.

“…15,[23][24][25] For the condensation reaction of diamino 2a-c with aldehyde derivatives, two different protocols have been employed. With diamino 2a and 2.5 equiv of 2-hexylthiophene-5-carbaldehyde 3a or 3,4-dihexyloxythiophene-5 carbaldehyde 3b, the green method using ethyl lactate as the solvent 26 in the presence of a little amount of P 2 O 5 (10% mol) led to compounds 1a and 1b easily purified by precipitation in water in 87% and 80% yields respectively. From diamino 2c bearing an ester group the condensation did not work in ethyl lactate due to trans-esterification reaction giving a mixture of compounds difficult to separate.…”

“…The exothermic reaction led to a yellow solid which was washed with methanol to give 1 in 90% yield. Compounds 2 were obtained by condensation of aldehyde 4 and pentafluoroaniline in ethyl lactate as solvent at room temperature with a little amount of P 2 O 5 (%5 mol%) [32][33][34][35]. After 8 h stirring the mixture was poured in a water-methanol solution (50-50 vol.)…”

“…As an extracting solvent, it is used to recover squalene from olive oil [13], carotenoids from tomato waste [14], lycopene from tangerine and tomato powders [15]. It is a tunable solvent for the synthesis of aryl aldimines [16] and also a replacing solvent for N-methyl pyrrolidone (NMP), toluene, acetone and xylene, which has resulted in a safer workplace [17,18]. Alcoholic lotion of EL accounts for clinical efficacy in acne vulgaris [19].…”
