Star-shaped molecules based on a triphenylamine core derivatized with various combinations of thienylenevinylene conjugated branches and electron-withdrawing indanedione or dicyanovinyl groups have been synthesized. UV-vis absorption and fluorescence emission data show that the introduction of the electron-acceptor groups induces an intramolecular charge transfer that results in a shift of the absorption onset toward longer wavelengths and a quenching of photoluminescence. Cyclic voltammetry shows that all compounds present a reversible first oxidation process whose potential increases with the number of electron-withdrawing groups in the structure. Prototype bulk and bilayer heterojunction solar cells have been realized using fullerene C60 derivatives as acceptor material. The results obtained with both kinds of devices show that the introduction of electron-acceptor groups in the donor structure induces an extension of the photoresponse in the visible spectral region, an increase of the maximum external quantum efficiency, and an increase of the open-circuit voltage under white light illumination. These synergistic effects allow reaching power conversion efficiencies of approximately 1.20% under simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation at 100 mW cm(-2).

Hybrid oligothiophenes based on a various combinations of thiophene and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) groups have been synthesized. UV/Vis absorption spectra show that the number and relative positions of the EDOT groups considerably affect the width of the HOMO-LUMO gap and the rigidity of the conjugated system. Analysis of the crystallographic structure of two hybrid quaterthiophenes confirms that insertion of two adjacent EDOT units in the middle of the molecule leads to a self-rigidification of the conjugated systems by intramolecular SO interactions. Cyclic voltammetry data shows that the first oxidation potential of the oligomers decreases with increasing chain length and increasing number of EDOT groups for a given chain length. Electrochemical studies and theoretical calculations show that the positions of the EDOT units in the conjugated chain control the potential difference (DeltaE(p)) between the first and second oxidation steps. Moving the EDOT groups from the outer to the inner positions of the conjugated system increases DeltaE(p). Theoretical calculations confirm that this phenomenon reflects an increase of the intramolecular coulombic repulsion between positive charges in the dication. A thin-film field-effect transistor was fabricated by vacuum sublimation of a pentamer with alternating thiophene-EDOT structure, and the hole mobility was determined.

Soluble thienylenevinylene oligomers based on 3,4-dihexylthiophene with chain length approaching 100 Å (16-mer) have been synthesized. Optical data obtained in solution and on solution-processed thin films show that chain extension produces a narrowing of the HOMO−LUMO gap (ΔE) and band gap (E g) which reach values significantly smaller than that of the parent polymer. Plots of ΔE and E g vs the reciprocal number of carbons in the chain (1/Cn) reveal a deviation from linearity beyond the 10−12-mer suggesting a limit of convergence around the 20−22-mer. Cyclic voltammetry shows that chain lengthening induces a negative shift of the first redox potential, an increase of the number of accessible redox states, and a decrease of the Coulombic repulsion in multicationic species. Thus, the 16-mer can be charged up to the hexacationic state within a 0.60-V potential window. A plot of the potential of the various redox steps vs 1/Cn suggests full coalescence into a single-step process for the 20−22-mer. A single process is indeed observed for solution cast films of 16-mer, and the respective contributions of the intra- and intermolecular mechanisms in the recombination process are discussed.

2,2'-bithiophene derivatives, 5-ammoniumethylsulfanyl-2,2'-bithiophene (AESBT) and 5,5'-bis(ammoniumethylsulfanyl)-2,2'-bithiophene (BAESBT), have been designed for their incorporation in organic-inorganic materials based on iodometalates. Three layered compounds, (BAESBT)PbI(4), (AESBT)(4)Pb(3)I(10), and (AESBT)(3)Bi(2)I(9), have been synthesized as crystals from slowly cooled aqueous solution containing metal halide and bithiophene derivative salts. When starting from the diammonium cation, (BAESBT)PbI(4) hybrid perovskite is obtained. (BAESBT)PbI(4) adopts a triclinic cell (P1) with the lattice parameters a = 8.4741(5) A, b = 8.9255(6) A, c = 16.876(1) A, alpha = 88.328(5) degrees, beta = 81.806(4) degrees, gamma = 88.864(5) degrees, Z = 2. In the structure, PbI(4)(2)(-) perovskite sheets and diammonium cation layers alternate along c. The incorporation of the corresponding monoammonium cation (AESBT) leads to a head to tail arrangement of the molecules in the (AESBT)(4)Pb(3)I(10) hybrid, precluding the formation of the perovskite layers. (AESBT)(4)Pb(3)I(10) is orthorhombic, Pna2(1), with a = 38.333(4) A, b = 22.239(3) A, c = 8.448(2) A, Z = 4. The structure consists of corrugated layers of Pb(3)I(10)(4)(-) separated by organic layers of monoammonium cations. A similar relative situation of molecules in organic layers is observed in (AESBT)(3)Bi(2)I(9), with the inorganic sheets being built up from Bi(2)I(9)(3)(-) entities. (AESBT)(3)Bi(2)I(9) crystallizes in an orthorhombic cell (P2(1)2(1)2(1)) with a = 8.4564(6) A, b = 21.368(2) A, c = 30.747(2) A, Z = 4. In the three compounds, the molecular packings appear different, underlining the interplay between both organic and inorganic components. New packings are stabilized, as illustrated by an original mixed kappa-alpha type arrangement of the bithiophene units in (AESBT)(3)Bi(2)I(9). Furthermore, molecular interactions, especially of S.S type, appear stronger in the hybrids based on the monoammonium cations. The electrical conductivity of a (BAESBT)PbI(4) single crystal has also been investigated, revealing a semiconductive behavior with a characteristic energy of E(g) = 2.535 eV.

Two novel “hybrid” systems consisting of a triphenylamine core carrying π-conjugated terthienyl branches have been synthesized and characterized by differential scanning calorimetry, X-ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, UV−vis absorption, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The semiconductor potentialities of these compounds, which lead to glassy or amourphous films, have been evaluated by their implementation in very simple prototype devices that display electroluminescence at low voltage as well as a photovoltaic effect. Moreover, field-effect transistors based on one of these novel molecules display a high hole mobility (1.1 × 10-2 cm V-1 s-1). These results suggest that molecules leading to amorphous materials could represent a valid alternative as compared to systems that require control of the molecular orientation/organization.

Thienylenevinylene oligomers (nTVs) containing up to 10 thiophene rings and bearing solubilizing hexyl groups at the α-position of the end thiophene rings or octyl or dibutyl chains at the 3-position or the 3- and 4-positions of the thiophene rings have been synthesized by a combination of formylation reaction, Wittig−Horner olefination, and McMurry dimerization. Owing to the good solubility imparted by alkyl chains, the electrochemical behavior of nTVs has been analyzed for the first time. Chain extension leads to a negative shift of the peak potentials corresponding to the formation of the cation radical and dication and to a decrease of their difference. For the octamers the dication is formed directly through a two-electron transfer while the system can be reversibly charged up to the tetracationic state. Electronic absorption spectra show the expected bathochromic shift of λmax and decrease of the HOMO−LUMO gap with extension of the conjugation length. Thus, solution-cast films of octamers exhibit band-gap values comparable to or even smaller than that of the parent poly(thienylenevinylene) (PTV). Extrapolation of the electrochemical and optical data to infinite chain length suggests that the oxidation potential and intrinsic band gap of a defect-free PTV could be significantly smaller than the present experimental values.
