IntroductionTurkey has a rich floristic diversity and cultural heritage. Even though many scientific studies have explored the usage of wild plants for the purpose of treatment, foodstuff, or others, efforts carried out in this field are not adequate in documenting this kind of information because of the large surface area of the country and the richness of cultural heritage. In particular, factors such as increased migration from rural areas to urban areas, urbanization, increased coverage of health services, easier accessibility to transportation, and current improvements in technology have gradually reduced the need for ethnobotanical information. Consequently, due to insufficient documentation and the reluctance of new generations to convey such knowledge, this wealth of wisdom is vanishing day by day. Therefore, it would be useful to try various alternative ways and carry out similar studies so as to have access to these data.Folk medicine in the Black Sea region of Turkey has been investigated by several research groups

IntroduçãoO conhecimento nativo sobre a utilização de plantas medicinais tem sido bem documentado em várias partes do mundo (Begossi et al. 2002). Esta prática tradicional ainda é comum em vários povos, sendo mais evidente nos países em desenvolvimento, onde a maior parte da população pobre não tem acesso aos medicamentos industrializados (Ayyanar & Ignacimuthu 2005).O uso de recursos naturais por populações urbanas de origem rural é orientado por um conjunto de conhecimentos resultantes da relação com o ambiente natural na qual estavam inseridas bem como pelas relações sociais em que estão imersas no meio urbano. Por estes motivos, pesquisas nesta área foram uma das que mais se desenvolveram nos últimos anos para a descoberta de produtos naturais bioativos (Maciel et al. 2002).Neste trabalho, realizou-se um estudo a respeito do conhecimento e uso de plantas medicinais na comunidade urbana de Muribeca, entre dois grupos considerados conhecedores de plantas medicinais: moradores com treinamento fornecido por organizações governamentais sobre uso e manipulação de plantas medicinais e moradores sem treinamento formal, com conhecimento sobre plantas medicinais transmitido pela tradição oral. A pesquisa foi direcionada para responder à seguinte questão: a aquisição de um conhecimento formal, somado ao já adquirido tradicionalmente sobre uso e manipulação de plantas medicinais, modifi caria a importância das plantas popularmente utilizadas por uma população e/ou suas indicações terapêuticas? A partir deste levantamento etnobotânico as espécies que apresentaram uma maior Importância Relativa foram discutidas objetivando-se detectar alguma relação entre a indicação popular e a validação científi ca. Objective: The aim of the study was to conduct an ethnobotanical study focused on the medicinal plants used in Randa (Djibouti) for testing pharmacological activities on common microbial diseases.Methods: Plant Ratio (PR), Index of Performance (IP) and the high Informant Consensus Factors (ICF) were calculated to select candidate medicinal species with a pharmacological potential. Results:From this previous work, it was found that the high Informant Consensus Factors, ICF (0.82) for the category of microbial diseases turned out to merit further perusal. The findings particularly gave an imminent insight that stimulated additional investigations and analyses. Different factors, including Plant Ratio (PR) and Index of Performance (IP) were employed for comparison leading to the selection of 18 candidates species, for subsequent pharmacological screening, and testing for antimicrobial activities. Comparison of the information with that accessed from the literature implicitly hinted that the Djiboutian traditional medical system shares much in common with other traditional medical systems. At least six out of the 18 species have not been pharmacologically tested before. Conclusion:The comparison of differents factors (IP2, PR and FL') of plants screening have showed that 18 plants species of Randa region, have good healing potential for infectious diseases. This may inspire continued research to build a comprehensive ethnobotanical and ethnopharmacological profiles of the species anticipated to be of the most promising potential for Djibouti and beyond.
