Punica granatum L (pomegranate) is a deciduous shrub, native to Iran. Nowadays, besides its use as a fruit, its medicinal properties have attracted the interest of researchers of many countries. Pomegranate fruit has medicinal properties such as antiinflammatory and antibacterial activities. The pomegranate seed oil has inhibitory effect on skin and breast cancers. The pomegranate seed oil has phytoestrogenic compounds and the fruit is rich in phenolic compounds with strong antioxidant activity. Ellagic acid is one of the main components of pomegranate with phenolic structure and antioxidant activity. This review article presents the recently published findings on different aspects of this plant focusing on its medicinal properties

Background: Flavonoids are a group of polyphenolic compounds with antioxidant properties that help reduce cardiovascular risk factors. Kelussia odoratissima is a flavonoid-containing plant, the effect of which was analyzed on decreasing blood lipid levels in mice. Objectives: The present study was carried out with the aim of determining the anti-hyperlipidemia effects of this herb on mice. Materials and Methods:In this preclinical study, 70 Balb/c mice were divided to five 14-member groups and received normal diet, normal diet containing 5% olive oil, high cholesterol (2% cholesterol and 5% olive oil) diet and high cholesterol diet accompanied by Kelussia odoratissima 10% or 20% hydro-alcoholic extract. After two weeks, blood samples were taken and cholesterol, triglyceride, low density lipoprotein (LDL), very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), high density lipoprotein (HDL), and fasting blood sugar (FBS) were measured. Results: In this animal model, the levels of all serum lipids including cholesterol, HDL, VLDL, LDL, triglyceride and FBS had a significant decrease two weeks after the beginning of the study. Moreover, at the same time, in the group that received 20% hydro-alcoholic extract, the serum levels of cholesterol, HDL and LDL had a significant decrease (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Kelussia odoratissima might have a desirable effect on serum lipid profile and might have beneficial effects on hyperlipidemic patients.

Objective:To evaluate the antidiabetic and rejuvenating capability of tissues on alloxan induced diabetic rats under the effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Coriandrum sativum. Methods: Diabetic model was prepared by administration of alloxan monohydrate (150 mg/ kg i.p). The ethanolic leaf extracts of Coriandrum sativum at a dose of 200 and 400 mg/kg of body weight were administrated to diabetic induced groups for a period of 28 days. The effect of ethanolic leaf extract of Coriandrum sativum leaf extract on serum blood glucose, insulin, lipase, α-amylase and LDH as well as kidney function test [urea, uric acid, albumin, protein and creatinine] were measured in the alloxan induced diabetic rats. Results: In the acute toxicity study, ethanolic leaf extract of Coriandrum sativum leaf was non-toxic at 2 000 mg/kg in rats. The increased insulin level, albumin and protein level, decreased blood glucose and other biochemical parameters level were observed in diabetic rats treated with both doses of ethanol extract of Coriandrum sativum leaf compared to diabetic control rats. In Histopathological study were revealed toward normal. Conclusion: Ethanolic extract of Coriandrum sativum leaf possesses significant antidiabetic and rejuvenating capability of tissues.
