Ethnobotanical and antimicrobial study of some selected medicinal plants used in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) as a potential source to cure infectious diseases

Abstract: BackgroundPresent investigation deals with antimicrobial screening of ten medicinally important plants used by the inhabitants of district Haripur, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) for different infectious diseases.MethodsAqueous, n-hexane and ethanolic extracts of each plant were tested for their antimicrobial activity against both Gram positive and Gram negative strains of bacteria, as well as strain of yeast. Agar well diffusion and broth dilution methods were used to determine the antimicrobial activity of differe… Show more

“…The extracts of Pogostemon cablin and Pluchea indica showed the MIC values in the ranges 125–2,000 and 500–2,000 μg/ml, respectively, against four bacterial strains except P. aeruginosa . On the other hand, streptomycin sulfate and chloramphenicol used as positive controls showed strong antibacterial activities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria like as the results of previous studies [ 17 19 ].…”

“…Essential oils from the desert species P. centralis have been shown to be effective against gram-positive bacteria with MICs against S. aureus of approximately 0.1 mg/ml [14]. On the other hand, streptomycin sulfate and chloramphenicol used as positive controls showed strong antibacterial activities against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria like as the results of previous studies [15]. .…”

“…As described by Khan et al (2014) and glorybai et al (2015) plants are commonly used by traditional medicine as a source of cure for various diseases. However, the irrational use or the conception that a natural product does not cause harm to the health can be harmful to the individual, being associated to diverse problems like poisoning and anaphylactic shocks (lin et al 2018), being the toxicological studies of medicinal plants, of great relevance to the security of the individual (Saleh-e-In & Staden, 2018).…”
