Ethnic differentials on the labor market in the presence of asymmetric spatial sorting: Set identification and estimation

Abstract: This paper aims to isolate the ethnic gap on the labor market that can be attributed to ethnicity and not to dierences in individual characteristics or residential location. Controlling for residential location is important as ethnic minorities often live in distressed neighborhoods. It is also challenging because spatial sorting is likely to dier across ethnicities because of labor-or housing-market discrimination. This paper shows that controlling for neighborhoods and observed individual characteristics fai… Show more

“…The estimated coefficients are smaller in columns (2a) and (2b) compared to columns (1a) and (1b), thus suggesting that part of the ethnic differentials in the probability of unemployment is related to individual characteristics. Nevertheless, where they exist, differences across ethnic groups in the probability of unemployment remain statistically significant; this is consistent with Rathelot (2014), who provides evidence for…”

“…Another explanation for ethnic unemployment differentials is related to the spatial mismatch hypothesis, i.e., the concentration of ethnic minorities in areas with fewer job opportunities, and their lower willingness to commute long distances for work (e.g. Thomas 1998, Hellerstein et al 2008, Gobillon et al 2014, Rathelot 2014. Although most of the recent literature focuses on the US (e.g.…”

“…4 In the US, spatial factors also seem to play a role, and explain 1 to 1.5 percentage points of the difference in unemployment rates between Blacks and Whites. However, this corresponds to only 10 to 17.5% of the total racial 3 It is also consistent with Rathelot (2013) who studies the employment gap between French natives and second-generation Africans, and finds that between 63% and 89% of the employment gap remains after controlling for observable individual characteristics and location, which suggests that ethnic differences in access to the labor market play a major role and spatial factors a lesser role.…”
