Ethernet-based passive optical local-area networks for fiber-to-the-desk application

Abstract: Abstract-We introduce optical local-area network (LAN) architectures based on multimode optical fiber and components, short wavelength lasers and detectors, and the widely used fast Ethernet protocol. These architectures are designed to lower the costs associated with passive optical LAN implementation. Further reduction in overall cost is achieved through decreased network downtime, lower maintenance cost, extended geometrical spans, and larger headroom for future capacity increase. These optically transparen… Show more

“…A one-stage tree, therefore, has the PCIs 0 and 1. A detailed study on the orthogonality between phase codes has been done by [10]. Two factors determine the orthogonality, namely the PCIs and the multiplication factors applied at each stage to the path length difference of the first stage.…”

“…In order to keep the cost of the short-haul data system low, monolithically integrated CMOS optical detectors are preferred in both data communication [1] and optical storage systems (inside pick-up units) [2]. The integrated photo diodes avoid the relatively high capacitance of discrete photo diodes (device and interconnect) and its influence on the bandwidth.…”

“…The transmission direction from ONUs to the OLT is referred to as upstream. However, with the emergence of new services such as storage area networking, local area networking (LAN) and on demand or broadcast video services [3], apart form the upstream and downstream transmissions between the CO and ONUs, customers of a PON may require private communication links between themselves for various services.…”

“…(2) In such a shared ring, any possible failure in the ONU node will lead to a system crash. (3) The signals traversing through the ring are regenerated at each ONU, which make the ONUs more expensive. A broadcasting star architecture seems to be a good choice to achieve physical layer LAN emulation and impose little alteration on the PON architecture.…”
