Etesians and the summer circulation over East Mediterranean in Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 5 simulations: Connections to the Indian summer monsoon

Abstract: Etesians are north to south direction winds in the lower atmosphere, blowing over the Aegean basin from early summer to early autumn. They are an important circulation component for the East Mediterranean (EMED) area, linked to the subsidence and ascent circulation over EMED and the extended Indian monsoon region, respectively. In this study we investigate the evolution of Etesian days and the associated wind speed (10 m) over the recent past (1979–2005) in simulations from Earth System Models (ESMs) available… Show more

“…The fundamental modes of climate variability over the globe (ENSO and Asian Monsoon) are the dominant components of climate variability that influence the tropical, subtropical and midlatitude atmospheric circulation (Hasanean, 2004;Wang and Ding, 2008;Goswami, 2011;Cherchi et al, 2014;Anagnostopoulou et al, 2014;Sharmila et al, 2015;Freychet et al, 2015;Rizou et al, 2015;Dafka et al, 2017a;Rizou et al, 2018;Lu et al, 2018;Yan et al, 2018;Logothetis et al, 2019). During the summer period the atmospheric circulation over the EMED is part of the tropical circulation (over the African domain) and the low-level branch of Hadley circulation, which are related to the Etesian wind system (Raicich et al, 2003).…”

“…The Eastern Mediterranean finds itself at a transcontinental region, comprising north Africa, Middle-East and Europe. Being a crossroads of different climatic patterns, it is affected by both the mid-latitude dynamics and tropical atmospheric circulation processes (Rodwell and Hoskins, 1996;Cherchi et al, 2014;Rizou et al, 2018;Logothetis et al, 2019).…”
