The faxinal management system is an endangered agro-silvopastoral system which forms part of the local traditional management in the Paraná federal state (Brazil). Significant changes in land management since the 1970s caused farmers to look for alternatives to increase the productivity of their farms. The introduction of new pasture species is causing land degradation problems, of which soil erosion is the most important challenge. Therefore, in this study, we assessed the environmental consequences of introducing exotic pasture species, such as Brachiaria decumbens. To achieve this goal, ten erosion plots were installed with exotic and native pastures (Paspalum notatum Flüggé) to quantify soil and water losses in paired plots. Total rainfall per event, soil properties (soil cover, texture, organic matter, bulk density, porosity, and soil penetration resistance), and pasture production were also estimated. Our results showed a decrease in organic matter and porosity and an increase of the bulk density in the exotic pasture plots. Soil erosion monitoring showed higher soil losses for the exotic cultivated plots (359.8 g m −2 or 3.6 mg ha −1) than for the native plots (90.7 g m −2 or 0.91 mg ha −1). The highest percentage of bare soil surfaces and compaction coincided with the highest soil erosion rates measured in the exotic pastures. However, the mean fodder production in the exotic plots was almost five times higher (987 kg DM ha −1) than in the native ones (204 kg DM ha −1). These findings confirm that farmers have an internal conflict. They want to optimize the production of fodder, but this leads to high soil erosion rates and reduces soil fertility in the medium-and long-term. The traditional, less productive pastoral system is more sustainable from an environmental and cultural point of view. However, this system may not be sustainable from an economic point of view.

A estrutura diamétrica da floresta apresentou a tendência à exponencial negativa (Figura 2), característica esperada para florestas naturais com boa capacidade de regeneração (Nascimento et al, 2004), resultado similar a outras florestas (Nascimento et al, 2011;Watzlawick et al, 2011;Ebling et al, 2013). Esse padrão foi verificado para as três categorias sucessionais, no entanto, o melhor ajuste das frequências observadas foi obtido para as espécies secundárias tardias (R²= 0,9411) e secundárias iniciais (R²= 0,9353), indicando que estas categorias se encontravam mais adaptadas à estrutura da floresta no momento da avaliação.…”

Este estudo objetivou estudar a composição das categorias sucessionais no componente arbóreo de uma Floresta Ombrófila Mista Montana, Nova Prata-RS, em relação à estrutura horizontal, vertical e diamétrica. Para amostragem do componente arbóreo (circunferência à altura do peito ≥ 30,0 cm), foram instaladas sistematicamente 71 parcelas de 10 x 100 m. As espécies secundárias tardias (286,2 indivíduos ha-1 ; 15,37 m 2 ha-1 ; 45,60%) e secundárias iniciais (274,9 indivíduos ha-1 ; 13,91 m 2 ha-1 ; 45,86%) apresentaram maior densidade, dominância e valor de importância, respectivamente. A maior porcentagem de indivíduos das secundárias tardias (36,5% dos indivíduos) foi observada no estrato inferior, das secundárias iniciais (38,3% dos indivíduos) no estrato médio e das pioneiras (53,4% dos indivíduos) no estrato superior. As três categorias sucessionais mostraram estrutura diamétrica com tendência à exponencial negativa, condição similar ao componente arbóreo em geral, todavia as secundárias tardias apresentaram estrutura mais desenvolvida, com indivíduos em todas as classes de diâmetro, evidenciando que a floresta favoreceu o desenvolvimento dessas espécies. With the occurrence of intensive climate change, there is a risk of irreversible damage to global biodiversity, resulting in reduction of geographical distribution and species extinction. The objective of this study was to evaluate the current distribution and the future projection of the areas of occurrence of Curitiba prismatica. Current occurrence data accessed in the SpeciesLink database and scientific studies were collected, which were correlated with the bioclimatic data available in WorldClim, for the current and future periods (2070), in the optimistic (RCP 4.5) and pessimistic scenarios (RCP 8.5) of the HadGEM2-ES model. In the current scenario, a species presents suitability restricted to mixed ombrophilous forest (MOF), with limited distribution to the center-south of the state of Paraná and the north of the state of Santa Catarina. For the future, there were reductions in the areas of climatic susceptibility for the species, both in the optimistic and pessimistic scenarios. In the RCP 4.5 scenario, the predictive reduction was found in the midwest region of Paraná, unlike the RCP 8.5 scenario, which showed a low reduction in this region. Therefore, in the future, areas with high suitability will tend to contract, but restricted to the regions of the first and second plateau of Paraná and the north of Santa Catarina. In this sense, these areas are indicated for commercial planting and in situ and ex situ conservation of the species.
