Estrogen receptor signaling protects against immune suppression by UV radiation exposure

Abstract: The phytoestrogenic isoflavonoid equol is known to protect against solar-simulated UV radiation-induced inflammation, immunosuppression, and skin carcinogenesis. The mechanism may involve antioxidant actions, because equol not only is a radical scavenger but also enhances the induction of a relevant cutaneous antioxidant, metallothionein. However, this study in female hairless mice examined whether the estrogenicity of the isoflavonoid might be responsible. Protection by topically applied equol against photoim… Show more

“…The mice were housed under gold lighting (GEC F40GO tubes) that does not emit UVB radiation. The solar-simulated UV (SSUV) radiation source and protocol have been described (34). For the first week, mice received a daily dose of 0.5 Â minimal erythemal daily dose (MEdD), and for the next 19 weeks, 1.0 Â MEdD daily.…”

“…Sex hormones are also known broadly to influence inflammation (34)(35)(36)(37). The increased levels of oestrogen at menarche may influence the Thl and Th2 immune responses through cytokines and chemokines, including monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) production (38)(39)(40)(41).…”

“…For example, work by Halliday and Damian groups have found that male skin has a greater susceptibility to respond to solar simulated UV-induced immunosuppression via a Mantoux-induced erythema protocol (FIG. It has been suggested that hormonal differences may play an important role in that estrogens provide a protective effect in skin (20). Interestingly, the authors found that topical nicotinamide (niacinamide) can prevent the induced immunosuppression in both genders (17), which had been previously assessed in murine models (18).…”
