“…The development of irrigation management strategies, especially those aimed at mitigating the effects of saline stress on plants (Silva et al, 2013;Oliveira et al, 2015), is one way to increase the cowpea productivity in regions with salinity problems. Among these strategies, the application of natural or synthetic substances that alleviate the salinity stress on plants may be an important alternative (Oliveira et al, 2017). Several studies have been conducted aiming the development of techniques that might alleviate the negative effects of irrigation with saline water, the use of biostimulants is among the techniques studied (Oliveira et al, 2013(Oliveira et al, , 2017.…”

Biostimulants are products that can assist plants in overcoming abiotic stresses, mainly due to their roles as hormonal and nutritional stimulants (Oliveira et al, 2016).…”

“…The height of the seedlings of yellow passion fruit plant ( Table 2) was influenced so much by the saline levels in the irrigation water as for the application of the biostimulants, it was observed that were verified in the absence of the application of the biostimulant to the smallest averages, however, the use of the same ones increased the growth in height, however it didn't lessen the noxious effect of the saline stress. In agreement with Oliveira et al (2017) the biostimulant use favors the growth and biomass production, but it doesn't lessen the effect of the saline stress and when used in high doses potentiate the effect of the salinity.…”

“…However, the use of highly-saline water for irrigation, associated with the climatic conditions of the semi-arid region, reduces the production of the crop, since its physiology and biochemistry are damaged (Santos et al, 2009;Sousa et al, 2014). For instance, reduction in absorption, transport and assimilation of nutrients, led to reduction in photosynthesis and consequently in growth (Munns and Tester, 2008;Oliveira et al, 2017;Sá et al, 2017). Soil salinity occurs due to the accumulation of soluble salts, particularly Na + and Cl ions (Mesquita et al, 2015).…”
