Estimation of Restriking Transient Overvoltage on Disconnecting Switch for GIS

Abstract: On an actual 550kV GIS (gas-insulated switchgear), the restriking surges of disconnecting switches at a high frequency of several MHz were successfully measured by employing two different methods. Further, by comparing the measured waveforms with waveforms obtained through calculations, it has been proved that restriking surge of disconnecting switches can be estimated by conducting calculations with considerably high accuracy. Also included, in this paper are certain suggestions regarding GIS simulation metho… Show more

“…Elbows, spacers, and spherical shields are modeled by a lumped capacitance of 15 pF. Here, the surge arrester is represented by a capacitance of 200 pF when simulating VFT resulting from DS . Different model has been selected for open and closed states of switches.…”

“…Other problems such as erroneous operation and failure of electronic control circuits connected to GIS units are subjected to electromagnetic interference by VFTO. Furthermore, it has been reported that the dielectric strengths of non-uniform electric fields formed by the metallic particles involved are reduced when VFTO are applied [5].…”

“…Due to the excellent insulation characteristics of SF~ gas, gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) is used widely at high-voltage substations. It is well known that fast transient overvo1tages (FTO) with risetimes of several nanoseconds are generated as a result of operation of the disconnector installed in GIS [1][2][3][4][5].…”
