Estimation of Leaf Chlorophyll a, b and Carotenoid Contents and Their Ratios Using Hyperspectral Reflectance

Abstract: Japanese horseradish (wasabi) grows in very specific conditions, and recent environmental climate changes have damaged wasabi production. In addition, the optimal culture methods are not well known, and it is becoming increasingly difficult for incipient farmers to cultivate it. Chlorophyll a, b and carotenoid contents, as well as their allocation, could be an adequate indicator in evaluating its production and environmental stress; thus, developing an in situ method to monitor photosynthetic pigments based on… Show more

“…This effect resulted from the substantial increase in chlorophyll b caused by the latter treatment, which was not supported by an increase in chlorophyll a. The ratio chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b has been proposed as a parameter to evaluate crops response to environmental adversities, diseases, and stresses [ 70 ]. In particular, some stressors can provoke the conversion of the chlorophyll a to b via the enzyme activity of Chl a oxygenase [ 71 ].…”

“…Also, the proximal measurement of original reflectance and data preprocessing procedures support the in situ hyperspectral analysis of the leaves of Eutrema japonicum, called the Japanese horseradish or wasabi, to assay chlorophyll and carotenoids as biomarkers of the plant stress in response to changes in pH and sulfur. This procedure has been thus proposed as a suitable tool to support a proper greenhouse cultivation of highly sensitive plants, particularly helpful for inexpert farmers [39]. Chlorophyll fluorescence can be also exploited as indirect biomarker for the in situ optical measurement of anthocyanins in grape [40] (Figure 6).…”

“…Therefore, the modeling accuracy was not high. The use of machine learning algorithms is an effective way to express the complex relationship between the modeling factors and dependent variables (Saitta et al, 2011;Sonobe et al, 2021). The back propagation (BP) approach has been used to determine plant diseases (Saleem et al, 2019), and this methodology has potential in the analysis of hyperspectral reflectance data.…”
