Resumo O artigo reconstrói o diálogo intelectual do crítico e diplomata José Guilherme Merquior com marxistas brasileiros, vários dos quais pertenciam a uma geração intelectual comum e partilhavam com o autor uma mesma estrutura de sociabilidade. Destacam-se as ásperas polêmicas nas páginas da imprensa brasileira e troca de ideias na revista Presença, no final dos anos 1980 e início da década de 1990. Argumenta-se que o diálogo de Merquior com o marxismo foi, principalmente, uma conversa crítica, nem sempre explícita, com seus amigos Leandro Konder e Carlos Nelson Coutinho, com os quais partilhou um terreno comum, caracterizado filosoficamente pela crítica ao irracionalismo e ao dogmatismo e, politicamente, pela defesa da Democracia.

The development of superabsorbent hydrogels (SHs) is a very important issue in both academic and industrial fields because of their applications in several technologies. The impressive number of publications dealing with SH confirms this statement: a quick search in the ISI (Web of Science) database under the words superabsorbent hydrogels revealed more than 600 articles published, with about 80% of those published in last decade. Current studies on the development of SHs have focused on the formulation of highly functional materials with enhanced properties for suitable applications in different fields. In light of this, the incorporation of microsized or nanosized materials in SH formulations has been explored as a very attractive strategy for tailoring desired properties. In this review, we discuss relevant aspects of the current knowledge of SHs and nanocomposite polymer hydrogels, mainly those based on chitin and cellulose nanocrystals (fibers and/or whiskers), bringing to light some structure-property relationships and future trends.

“…Prior efforts to model the kinetics of cellulose nitration have considered systems such as cellulose fibers where the influence of diffusion on the reversible cellulose nitration reaction is insignificant 4,5 or have considered only cellulose molecular weight distributions and diffusion at the surface of cellulose fiber 6 while neglecting to treat the nitration of cellulose as a reversible reaction. These approaches can only be applied to systems where the influence of dense cellulose structures is insignificant, or are inconsistent with the previously reported single cellulose fiber (SCF) kinetic model 4 that demonstrated that the nitration of cellulose fibers is reversible and is not limited by mass transfer of acid species into the fiber structure.…”

Chemical reaction modeling of industrial scale nitrocellulose production for military applications

A model was developed to describe the nitration of cellulose in mixed acids used in the production of military grade nitrocellulose. Acid dissociation, swelling, diffusion, and chemical reaction were considered to model the nitration of industrially important cellulose materials for given reaction times and conditions. This model is supported by experimental work conducted to measure the dynamics of swelling and diffusion in wood pulp slivers, and the model was validated using the results of lab‐scale nitration reactions. Microcomputed tomography was also used to perform a structural analysis of wood pulp slivers that were cut on industrial, rotary cutting machines to evaluate features that may influence the reactivity of these materials.
