Estimation of food demand in Turkey: method of an almost ideal demand system

Abstract: In this study, data of the household income and consumption expenditure surveys conducted by the Turkish Statistical Institute for 1994 and 2003 years were used; income, price, and cross price elasticities under six aggregated product groups were estimated within the framework of the an almost ideal demand system approach for food expenditures; and estimation of household consumers' food demand in Turkey was analyzed. According to the findings obtained, it was established that a price-bound change would appear… Show more

“…The overall results of CV indicate that all countries experience a significant loss of well-being due to price rise, this finding is matched with Friedman et al (2011) and Benfica (2014). The estimates of CV for cereals in this study revealed a loss in welfare for each country like Ackah and Appleton (2007), Leyaro et al (2010) and Şahinli and Fidan (2012). Also the results of CV for milk and meat products are matched with Wood et al (2009), Robles and Keefe (2011), Haq et al (2008) and Pons (2011).…”

“…Disposable income currently does not allow full satisfaction of demand for food and other essential holdings. At is known, despite the fact that household consumption expenditures are composed of various product groups, food expenditures represent an important part of them (Sahinli, M. A., Fidan, H., 2012). A lot of studies realized in the diff erent countries (Japan, Great Britain, South Korea, solve a problem of food expenditures of households from the several points of view (Fukuda, Hiyoshi, 2012;Ng, Ni Mhurchu, Jebb, Popkin, 2012;Imhoff -Kunsch, Flores, Dary, Martorell, 2012;Youn, Lim, Jin, 2012).…”

“…Furthermore, econometric software Eviews 10 was used. In this study, the Almost Ideal Demand System (AIDS) approach was applied to analyze the vegetable oil demand in the Iranian rural and urban sector for following benefits: a) it applies arbitrarily the firstorder approximation to any system; b) it meets the principle of choice; c) it aggregates over consumers perfectly; d) its functional form makes it in consistence with household budget data; e) it can be easily estimated; and f) allows testing of symmetry and homogeneity conditions (Blanciforti & Green, 1983;Şahinli & Fidan, 2012;Satari Yuzbashkandi & Mehrjo, 2020).…”

“…The contribution of different commodity groups from the food expenditure Given the expenditure and consumption variation among Iranian households, examining the structure of food consumption is an important issue. Thus, the food elasticities of income, expenditure and price can be used as useful tools in the implementation of effective food policy (Şahinli & Fidan, 2012). Some studies have been conducted to analyze food items demand using the AIDS approach in Iran and the world (Alnafissa & Alderiny, 2019;Ataie s & Mohammadi, 2018;Chen, Saghaian, & Zheng, 2018;Hoang, 2018;Hooshmand, Khodadad Kashi, & Khoshnevis, 2017;Pishbahar & Nataj Firoozjah, 2014;Rathnayaka, Selvanathan, Selvanathan, & Kler, 2019;Şahinli & Fidan, 2012;Sekhampu & Niyimbanira, 2013;Yazdani & Sherafatmand, 2013).…”
