Estimation of animal × environment interaction in Czech beef cattle

Abstract: The objective was the estimation of animal × environment interaction for weaning weight (WWT) of the most frequent breeds of beef cattle in the Czech Republic. The environment was represented by 3 areas: Mountain (1), Foothills (2) and Lowland (3). A pairwise analysis was carried out between the areas: 1 vs 2 (n=5 149) and 2 vs 3 (n=4 971) for the estimation of (co)variance components and genetic correlations between the environments. A multiple-trait animal model was used where weaning weights in different ar… Show more

“…These authors stated that the evaluation of growth on the basis of weight gains in consecutive growth segments was more suitable than evaluation according to body weights because it is possible to determine more exactly the effects of fixed and random environment which influence the animal growth during particular periods. In recent years great progress has been made in beef cattle breeding in the Czech Republic and other countries (Přibyl et al 2003, Vostrý et al 2007, Vostrý et al 2008, Vostrý et al 2009, Bene et al 2010, Zahrádková et al 2010, Veselá et al 2011.…”

“…Conversely, rams are usually sold to other flocks. The different breeding conditions across flocks could also influence the genetic potential of sires if a genotype × environment interaction is manifested (Vostry et al 2009). Generally, genetic inter-relatedness of flocks is low in the Czech Republic, which enables individual sires to be compared only within flocks.…”

“…Usually, reaction norm models (RNM) have been used to assess GEI in several economically important breeds, such as dairy cattle (Bohmanova et al 2008, Streit et al 2012 and beef cattle (Ambrosini et al 2012, Corrêa et al 2009, Mattar et al 2011, Vostry et al 2009. The utilization of RNM in identification of high-quality individuals might potentially change the current paradigm of selection strategies, once the predictions of genetic values can differ for the same candidate to selection in distinct environments (Mattar et al 2011).…”
