Abstract. Surface runoff generation on arable fields is an important driver of flooding, on-site and off-site damages by erosion, and of nutrient and agrochemical transport. In general, three different processes generate surface runoff (Hortonian runoff, saturation excess runoff, and return of subsurface flow). Despite the developments in our understanding of these processes it remains difficult to predict which processes govern runoff generation during the course of an event or throughout the year, when soil and vegetation on arable land are passing many states. We analysed the results from 317 rainfall simulations on 209 soils from different landscapes with a resolution of 14 286 runoff measurements to determine temporal and spatial differences in variables governing surface runoff, and to derive and test a statistical model of surface runoff generation independent from an a priori selection of modelled process types. Measured runoff was related to 20 time-invariant soil properties, three variable soil properties, four rain properties, three land use properties and many derived variables describing interactions and curvilinear behaviour. In an iterative multiple regression procedure, six of these properties/variables best described initial abstraction and the hydrograph. To estimate initial abstraction, the percentages of stone cover above 10 % and of sand content in the bulk soil were needed, while the hydrograph could be predicted best from rain depth exceeding initial abstraction, rainfall intensity, soil organic carbon content, and time since last tillage. Combining the multiple regressions to estimate initial abstraction and surface runoff allowed modelling of event-specific hydrographs without an a priori assumption of the underlying process. The statistical model described the measured data well and performed equally well during validation. In both cases, the model explained 71 and 58 % of variability in accumulated runoff volume and instantaneous runoff rate (RSME: 5.2 mm and 0.23 mm min −1 , respectively), while RMSE of runoff volume predicted by the curve number model was 50 % higher (7.7 mm). Stone cover, if it exceeded 10 %, was most important for the initial abstraction, while time since tillage was most important for the hydrograph. Time since tillage is not taken into account either in typical lumped hydrological models (e.g. SCS curve number approach) or in more mechanistic models using Horton, Green and Ampt, or Philip type approaches to address infiltration although tillage affects many physical and biological soil properties that subsequently and gradually change again. This finding should foster a discussion regarding our ability to predict surface runoff from arable land, which seemed to be dominated by agricultural operations that introduce man-made seasonality in soil hydraulic properties.

A talaj vízháztartásától függ a természetes vegetáció és a termesztett növények víz-ellátása. Szerepet játszik a talaj levegő-és hőháztartásának, a biológiai aktivitás mérté-kének és a tápanyagforgalomnak a kialakításában is. Befolyásolja a talaj szerkezeti és technológiai tulajdonságait, meghatározza a talajművelés idejét, módját, valamint hat a talaj pufferképességére (VÁRALLYAY, 2004; 2005a,b).A talaj vízháztartását meghatározó tulajdonságok egyike a talaj víztartó képessége, mely lehetővé teszi, hogy a talajba szivárgó víz akár hosszabb ideig is raktározódjon a talajban. A talaj víztartó képességének mérése költséges, munka-és időigényes. Ugyanakkor lehetőség van arra, hogy egyszerűbben mérhető talajtulajdonságok alapján becsléssel határozzuk meg. A talajtani kutatások során kapott becslő függvényeket pedotranszfer függvényeknek (ptf) hívják a szakirodalomban. A meghatározást az angol "pedotransfer function"-ból vették át, mely a LAMP és KNEIB (1981) által használt "pedofunction" és a BOUMA és VAN LANENtől (1987) származó "transfer function" fogalmakból alakult ki. A pedotranszfer függvény definícióját BOUMA (1989) fogalmazta meg először, miszerint a függvény segítségével a rendelkezésre álló információkból olyan adatokat lehet előállítani, amelyek elsődleges mért forrásból nem hozzáférhetőek. A ptf-ek többségét a talaj vízgazdálkodási tulajdonságainak becslésére dolgozták ki, de léteznek a talaj egyéb fizikai és kémiai jellemzőit számító módszerek is. RAWLS (1983) például a talajok térfogattömegére dolgozott ki becslő módszert; a talajok szerves folyadék visszatartó képességét MAKÓ (2002) pedotranszfer függvénnyel becsülte; UNO és munkatársai (2005) távérzékelt információkból becsülték a talajok szervesanyagtartalmát; BELL és VAN KEULEN (1995, cit: MINASNY, 2007) a talajok kationkicserélő képességének becslésére dolgoztak ki módszert. A hiányzó adatokat egyre gyakrabban helyettesítik becsült értékkel a talajtani kutatásban. A mezőgazdasági és a környezeti modellezéshez szükséges hiányzó adatok pótlására azok pedotranszfer függvényekkel történő becslése megoldást jelenthet. Ugyanakkor mindig szem előtt kell tartani, hogy a becsült értékek hibája ismereten, így azok csak közelítő jellegűek és felülvizsgálatuk elmaradhatatlan feladat.A becslő módszerek alkalmazása nem új keletű, annak ellenére, hogy a ptf fogalma csak 1989 óta létezik. Már korábban is igény volt rá, hogy a nehezen mérhető talajtulajdonságokat egyéb, könnyebben meghatározható adatokból számítsák. VÁRALLYAY és munkatársai (1979) az 1970-es évekkel bezárólag, MINASNY (2007) pedig napjainkig tekinti át a becslő módszerek kidolgozásának történetét, felsorolva a főbb eredménye-ket. Az ő munkájukat is felhasználva tekintem át az első talajfizikai ptf-ek megalkotásá-tól napjainkig terjedő időszak becslő módszereit.

A b s t r a c t. Organic liquid retention of soils is a primary input variable for modelling the nonaqueous phase liquid transport and behaviour in the subsurface. In environmental and soil physical practice, it is mainly determined by scaling based on the water retention of soils or with charts of average empirical values of organic liquid retention or the fitting parameters of hydraulic functions. Predicting the fitting parameters of organic liquid retention curves with pedotransfer functions might be a promising alternative method, but this topic has only been researched to a limited extent. Thus we investigated the applicability of different hydraulic functions (3-and 4-parameter form of the van Genuchten equation and Brutsaert equation) for fitting organic liquid retention characteristics. Multivariate linear regression was used to build and develop pedotransfer functions, modelling relations between original and transformed values of basic soil properties and organic liquid retention. We attempted to generate parametric pedotransfer functions. According to our results, the applicability of hydraulic functions for fitting nonaqueous phase liquid retention curves to the experimental data was proven. The investigations gave promising results for the possibility to estimate soil nonaqueous phase liquid retention with parametric pedotransfer functions.
