Estimating the maximum earthquake magnitude in the Iranian Plateau

Abstract: The Iranian Plateau has been subjected to destructive earthquakes throughout its history. Reliable assessment of the seismic hazard in this earthquake-prone region is therefore essential. Our study focuses on estimating the maximum earthquake magnitude as one of the main parameters of seismic hazard analysis. We implemented two quantitative approaches, namely probabilistic and deterministic. The probabilistic method allows combining the historical (i.e., incomplete) and the instrumental parts of a catalog with… Show more

“…In the deterministic approach, the results obtained were influenced by the distance of the earthquake hypocenter from the research location and the magnitude of the earthquake (Caccavale, Sacchi, Spiga, & Porfido, 2019;Concha et al, 2020;Pouryari, Mahboobi Ardakani, & Hassani, 2022). Therefore, the farthest location from the earthquake will have a small PGA value, while the closest location will have a great PGA value (Kowsari, Ghazi, Kijko, Javadi, & Shabani, 2021;Mehta & Thaker, 2022;Stewart, Luco, Hooper, & Crouse, 2020). In other words, the closer a location is to the earthquake hypocenter, the greater the PGA value (Douglas, 2002;Mendoza, Ramos, & Dimalanta, 2022).…”

“…No best solution to 𝑀 c is available with no preliminary test; different techniques may give different 𝑀 c values after which care should be taken for the most appropriate 𝑀 c . The applied technique of 𝑀 c determination depends mainly on the characteristics of the regions of interest [13,14,15].…”
