Estimating the Incidence and Prevalence of Juvenile-Onset Recurrent Respiratory Papillomatosis in Publicly and Privately Insured Claims Databases in the United States

Abstract: Although relatively uncommon, JORRP represents a disease with significant morbidity. The incidence and prevalence of JORRP in publicly insured children were consistently higher than those covered by private insurance plans, suggesting an increased burden of illness among those with lower socioeconomic status.

“…Patients with small papillomas not requiring surgery would therefore not have been included even though they have active disease and would thus result in the true prevalence being underestimated. However this method of calculating the prevalence of JORRP was used in other studies on the prevalence of JORRP and was thus also used in this study in order to make comparison with those studies possible [3,[7][8][9][10].…”

“…The rarity of the disease, and its variable course, has made studying the disease and the efficacy of potential treatment strategies challenging. Prevalence estimates range from <1 to 4 per 100,000 . Typically, patients require multiple treatments over years to maintain airway and voice, although this is highly variable, with most requiring less frequent surgery over time …”

“…1 The condition is usually caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6 and 11; patients infected by HPV type 11 are prone to develop more aggressive disease. In the USA, the prevalence estimates are 0.51-1.03 per 100 000 children.…”
