2013) Doing sustainability: an application of an inter-disciplinary and mixed-method approach to a regional sustainable tourism project, Journal of Sustainable Tourism, 21:3, 355-375, This paper describes and explains an interdisciplinary and mixed-method approach to a large-scale sustainable tourism development project. The research took place in a two-county area straddling the Blue Ridge Parkway in the Appalachian mountains of Virginia, USA. It was commissioned in order to develop a sustainable tourism centerpiece to enhance the region and encourage visitor expenditures while maintaining the environment and quality of life of the community. In response to Hollinshead and Jamal's 2007 call for a more bricoleur and third ear approach to tourism research, a gap analysis of the region's tourism offerings was performed using six interdisciplinary, mixed-method research phases seeking to identify discrepancies between the current region's tourism offerings, visitor preferences and community stakeholders. Phases included a Community Resource Assessment (GIS-based Inventory), Stakeholder Interviews, a Visitor Survey and GPS visitor tracking, the development of seven Potential Scenarios, a Potential Visitor Survey and an Economic Analysis. Subsequently, two potential tourism centerpieces were developed with the goal of showcasing the region's unique mountain and agricultural heritage. In addition to providing a detailed overview of the research project, the paper concludes with discussion of the practical and political challenges, time constraints and rewards that accompany this type of research.

Zachodzące procesy globalizacyjne skutkują nasilaniem się konkurencji nie tylko na poziomie przedsiębiorstw, lecz także państw i regionów. Zjawisko to dotyczy m.in. turystyki. Regiony rywalizują o turystów nie tylko z są-siednimi obszarami, ale nawet z tymi, które leżą po drugiej stronie globu (BUHALIS, EGGER, red. 2008). Proces ten wymaga identyfikacji mocnych stron regionu i wypracowania przewagi konkurencyjnej, umożliwiającej wyróż-nienie obszaru spośród pozostałych. Dążenie do rozwoju turystyki ma o tyle duże znaczenie, że nawet jeżeli nie jest ona dominującym sektorem lokalnej gospodarki, to jej rozwój generuje wiele pozytywnych efektów, zarówno gospodarczych, jak i społecznych (GOELDNER, RITCHIE 2003).Konkurowanie na arenie międzynarodowej w dużym stopniu dotyczy miast, które rywalizują nie tylko o turystów, ale też o inwestorów, przedsię-biorców i nowych rezydentów. The participation of women in the hospitality industry is crucial. This research is conducted to explore factors that prevent female students from studying hotel management as a major at the Faculty of Tourism and Hospitality in the University of Jordan, located in Jordan. These factors include the financial aspects, cultural and social standpoints, religious perspective, and geographical reason. A total of 200 questionnaires containing 24 items was used to collect information from bachelor students at the University of Jordan-Aqaba. Results of the current study revealed that all the above barriers are applied to high levels in which the range of the mean score is 3.49-3.82. This study shall provide important feedback to decision-makers to encourage the female students further in studying hotel management degree specifically in Aqaba city.
