Estimating the carbon dynamics of South Korean forests from 1954 to 2012

Abstract: Abstract.Forests play an important role in the global carbon (C) cycle, and the South Korean forests also contribute to this global C cycle. While the South Korean forest ecosystem was almost completely destroyed by exploitation and the Korean War, it has successfully recovered because of nationalscale reforestation programs since 1973. There have been several studies on the estimation of C stocks and balances over the past decades in the South Korean forests. However, a retrospective long-term study that incl… Show more

“…In order to consider the changes in the forest stock, the forest area was divided into non-stocked forests and stocked forests based on the 5th National Forest Inventory of South Korea (NFI) and the age information presented by Lee et al [10] as the forest recovery scenario. Systematic sampling was then applied to the 5th NFI data with a 4-km grid size to place the sampling points within the grids to be surveyed from 2006-2010 [25].…”

“…Forest basically provides harvest wood and natural product, which can provide economic benefits. As the role of carbon pools, forest carbon in South Korea has now doubled since the 1950s, and the proportion of biomass has increased significantly [10]. Forests also have an air-purifying function and can act to purify chemical substances such as nitrogen oxides, sulfur oxides and semi-volatile organic compounds [59,60].…”

“…Thus, it is crucial to understand forest C dynamics to report national C inventories and implement optimal policies. South Korean forests sequester atmospheric C (Lee et al, 2014). These forests were almost destroyed after being exploited by the Japanese and the Korean War.…”

“…However, South Korean forests started recovering after the national scale reforestation program was started in 1973. Currently, the C sequestration of South Korean forests surpasses that of other countries (Lee et al, 2014). Pinus densiflora (red pine) is the most abundant tree species in South Korea (KFRI, 2011).…”
