Afforestation of forests in South Korea may provide an example of the benefit of afforestation on precipitation storage and erosion control. In this study, we presented the effects of afforestation on water supply and soil loss prevention. A spatio-temporal simulation of forest water yield and soil loss was performed from 1971-2010 using InVEST water yield and SWAT models. A forest stock change map was produced by combining land cover data and National Forest Inventory data. The forest water yield increased about twice with changes in forest stock and climate from 1971-2010 and showed a spatially homogeneous water supply capacity. In the same period, the soil loss decreased more than three times, and the volatility of soil loss, in the 2010s, was smaller than before. The analysis of the change in forest stock without considering climate change showed an increase of 43% in forest water yield and a decrease of 87% in soil loss. An increase in precipitation increased the water yield, but also increased the soil loss volume. A change in forest stock led to positive changes in both. This study presents functional positive effects of the afforestation program in South Korea that can be useful in various afforestation programs in other countries.

Currently, the C sequestration of South Korean forests surpasses that of other countries. In South Korea, Pinus densiflora (red pine) is the most abundant tree species. Thus, understanding the growth rate and biomass evolution of red pine forest in South Korea is important for estimating the forest C dynamics. In this paper, we derived empirical relationship between foliage biomass and the no blue band enhanced vegetation index (EVI-2) profile using both field work and multi-temporal Landsat-5 TM remote sensing data to estimate the productivity of forest biomass in South Korea. Our analysis combined a set of 84 Landsat-5 TM images from 28 different dates between 1986 and 2008 to study red pine forest development over time. Field data were collected from 30 plots (0.04 ha) that were irregularly distributed over South Korea. Individual trees were harvested by destructive sampling, and the age of trees were determined by the number of tree rings. The results are realistic (R 2 =0.81, p<0.01) and suggest that the EVI-2 index is able to adequately represent the development profile of foliage biomass in red pine forest growth.

Coarse woody debris (CWD) respiration (RCWD) has strengths in efficient investigation of CWD decomposition rate and application into studies on ecosystem carbon (C) processes. Here, RCWD was investigated in two Japanese red pine forests to determine its response to environmental factors and CWD properties, and its contribution to the ecosystem C budget. Samples were collected based on CWD position (log or snag), species (pine or deciduous), and decay class in the Gwangneung pine forest (GPF) and the Mt. Jumbong pine forest (JPF), Korea. RCWD was measured at different incubation temperatures using a closed chamber system. Annual RCWD was estimated by developing and applying air temperature–RCWD regressions to air temperature data. In the GPF, annual estimated RCWD (g C kg−1 year−1) was 29.54, 3.90, and 158.95 for pine logs, pine snags, and deciduous logs, respectively. In the JPF, RCWD was 49.09 for pine logs and 14.55 for pine snags. Temperature and CWD moisture were the main drivers of RCWD. CWD species also influenced RCWD, possibly by supporting different habitats for microbes and invertebrates. RCWD in the GPF accounted for approximately 4 % of heterotrophic respiration and 54 % of the CWD decomposition rate. In the JPF, RCWD was approximately equal to the CWD decomposition rate. RCWD might constitute a minor portion of the net ecosystem production (4 % in the GPF), because of the relatively high stand productivities and small CWD masses. In the GPF, the major factor influencing RCWD was mortality, whereas moisture had the greatest influence on RCWD in the JPF.
