Estimating the burden of disease and the economic cost attributable to chikungunya, Colombia, 2014

Abstract: Our estimates raise concerns about the effects of continued CHIK spread in Colombia and other Latin-American countries. The lack of transmission control for this disease and potential for spread means that there will be significant acute and chronic disability and related costs in the short and long term for Latin American health care systems.

“…CHIK is self-limiting and has a low mortality rate; however, fatal infections and chronic rheumatic disorders do occur (Charrel, De Lamballerie & Raoult, 2007). The infection not only poses adverse impact on human health but also contributes to overall socioeconomic burden of the community and health care system (Cardona-Ospina, Villamil-Gómez & Jimenez-Canizales, 2015). The virus can establish itself in any tropical or temperate region harboring the  Aedes  mosquitoes.…”

“…This human migration is associated with other infectious diseases, such as malaria or measles [8]. The burden that will be imposed on the region, if and when COVID-19 spreads, would be an additional challenge for the healthcare systems and economies in the region, as we faced with Zika and even the Chikungunya outbreaks [9]. For example, there is concern about the availability of intensive care units, that are necessary for at least 20-25% of patients hospitalized with COVID-19-also, the availability of specific diagnostic tests, particularly the real-time RT-PCR is a crucial challenge for early detection of COVID-19 importation and prevention of onward transmission.…”

“…In Colombia, cases of CHIKV infection were first identified in July 2014 (Cardona-Ospina et al , 2015) followed by cases of ZIKV infection in October 2015 (Pacheco et al , 2016). Both viruses cause similar initial symptoms with some distinctions, but a key difference between them is the short time course of ZIKV infection of two weeks or less, whereas infection with CHIKV can lead to arthritis and arthralgias that may persist for a year or more.…”
