Estimating Suicide Risk among Attempted Suicides: I. the Development of New Clinical Scales

Abstract: A discriminant function analysis was carried out to separate a sample of 75 suicides from a sample of 146 attempted suicides, on which comprehensive clinical and social data were recorded on an identical schedule. Two sets of discriminating items (with 18 and 6 variables) correctly classified 91 per cent and 83 per cent of the two samples in their respective groups. The results provide a basis for examining the usefulness of these variables as predictors of future suicide in people who have attempted suicide.

“…As a suicide intent index was a good predictor of future suicidal behavior in adults, individuals with a high suicide intent index pose a major public health problem. [26] Though 37% subjects had at least one stressful life events, it was the immediate precipitating factor which was signifi cantly associated with high suicide intention and resulted in a suicide attempt. This was obvious in most of the study subjects who had stressful life events like extramarital relation of spouse, excessive alcohol abuse by a family member, infertility, marital confl ict, family confl ict, and confl ict with in-laws.…”

“…Several studies have sought to construct instruments which combine indicators to give a more accurate prediction of risk. Pallis et al (1982) combined clinical information on symptoms with information about circumstances of the attempts and demographic information. They found that good discriminators included behavioural retardation (more common in completed suicides), anger, fatigue and a row in the previous 48 h (more common in attempted suicides).…”
