Estimates of the Size Distribution of Meteoric Smoke Particles From Rocket‐Borne Impact Probes

Abstract: Ice particles populating noctilucent clouds and being responsible for polar mesospheric summer echoes exist around the mesopause in the altitude range from 80 to 90 km during polar summer. The particles are observed when temperatures around the mesopause reach a minimum, and it is presumed that they consist of water ice with inclusions of smaller mesospheric smoke particles (MSPs). This work provides estimates of the mean size distribution of MSPs through analysis of collision fragments of the ice particles po… Show more

Havnes et al (2014); Antonsen and Havnes (2015); Antonsen et al (2017)) with similar interspacing, confirm the DUSTY measurements and display a similar difference between probe currents. A comparison between electron currents from needle Langmuir probes (U. of Oslo) shows that the correlation is generally clearly negative between dust number densities and electron densities, but in some regions of the cloud system the correlation is more variable and not as unambiguous.…”

“…Gumbel and Megner, 2009;Keesee, 1989; Rapp and Thomas, 2006;Turco et al, 1982). This conjecture is strongly supported by satellite and rocket born observations showing that MSPs are included in PMC ice particles (Antonsen et al, 2017;Havnes et al, 2014;Hervig et al, 2012). The initial ice particle formation has been described in two different ways.…”

“…Ice particle formation is believed to initiate heterogeneously on nanometer-sized recondensed meteoric material, so-called meteoric smoke particles (MSPs) (e.g., Gumbel and Megner, 2009;Keesee, 1989;Rapp and Thomas, 2006;Turco et al, 1982). This conjecture is strongly supported by satellite and rocket-borne observations showing that MSPs are included in PMC ice particles (Antonsen et al, 2017;Havnes et al, 2014;Hervig et al, 2012).
